rainy weather

Okay, I%26#39;m nervous. We leave this weekend and the weather predicts rain showers all week. We are staying in the Wailea area. What are my chances we have rain every day? Any activity ideas on a rainy Maui day?

rainy weather

I%26#39;M going to go out on a limb here and guess that you%26#39;ve been looking at weather.com - if that%26#39;s the case, stop it right now!

Weather.com is notoriously bad for making the weather look terrible for large areas of Hawaii when the predicted rain is likely to be either very scattered or very brief. That%26#39;s because they group large areas together under one forecast, and Hawaii is a land of many, many microclimates.

This is where you should get your Hawaiian weather forecasts:

www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/content.php?pid=52

As you can see the chance of rain in your area ranges from zero to 20% all week long. That%26#39;s a 20% chance that SOME rainfall will fall at SOME time in that area during the time in question - not that there is a 20% chance of it raining ALL day, just a 20% chance of raindrops falling at some time.

This is not uncommon, and although no one can promise anything, it%26#39;s actually a pretty decent forecast, because it means that there is between 100% and 80% that you will get NO rain whatsoever (not matter how brief or how light) during the day or night in question.

Pretty darned good odds I%26#39;d say. People always get sooooooo nervous when the see showers forecasted. The fact is, yeah it may rain on you, and it%26#39;s aways possible you could be drenched, but the likelihood is the weather will be pretty darned nice most of the time, and that any rain you get will be infrequent, brief, and even somewhat welcome. Often it rains in Upcountry and from the beach areas where%26#39; you%26#39;ll be you can look upslope and see the rain maybe a mile or 2 away, but it just hangs around up there and the beach areas remain dry.

Don%26#39;t worry about it. Go and have a GOOD time.

You really don%26#39;t want to go to Maui and miss seeing the beautiful rainbows. Enjoy.

Thanks for your info. You are right, I was looking at weather.com. Rain or not, I%26#39;ll be in paradise!

here in Washington State you can tell its summer because the rain is warm. Warm rain in Paradice is fine with me. I to have been looking at the weather. I know on Maui 95%of the rain is in the AM and clears to a wonderful day.

From most popular places on Maui you can drive 20 or 30 minutes and get out of the rain. It%26#39;s rarely raining everywhere at once.

enjoy!

Does hubby need a Sportscoat?

We plan to spend our time snorkeling and enjoying beaches and although we do like good food, don%26#39;t want to spend a lot of time finding the ';best'; places to eat. That said, I did just make Sunday Brunch reservations for the Prince Court and we will probably do one very nice dinner.

So, do we need to drag along a sportcoat or what is acceptable dress in the nicer establishments?

Thanks

Does hubby need a Sportscoat?

90+% of the time, a shirt with buttons on it will suffice.

Does hubby need a Sportscoat?

I agree. An Aloha shirt and nice slacks is about the most dressed up I%26#39;ve ever seen anyone. I%26#39;ve read that it%26#39;s even proper attire for many funerals. My kind%26#39;a place.

The only restaurants that I have seen that had a ';jackets required'; policy were the Formal Dining Room at the Lodge at Koele on Lana%26#39;i and at Le Mer in Honolulu. And I just noticed that the at the Lodge they now say ';aloha wear'; is fine. The only time an extra clothing layer of any type is nice, is when one is dining outside on a windy evening

in January. But a light sweater would be fine. I always have a sweater along since I have to get from my home to the airport without freezing (a problem in Minnesota in winter).

My great uncle ignored my advice an carried a sport coat on his trip to Oahu and Kaua%26#39;i. Never unpacked it. %26lt;G%26gt;

In a word, no.

south maui

We are staying at the 4 seasons in Feb. Can someone tell me how far it is to west maui? I hear that is where more of the shopping, restaurants, Etc...

Thanks

I%26#39;m not sure of the exact milage but the drive should take between 45 minutes to an hour. It%26#39;s not the distance but some areas the speed limit is 25 mph. It%26#39;s a beautiful drive and the time will fly by.

  • Not your usual biking adventure

If you are a serious (and I do mean serious) cyclist and you are looking for an alternative biking excursion besides going down the mountain, I highly recommend ';Go Cycling Maui';. I can not stress enough, that this is not for amateurs nor for the faint of heart. My husband bikes and wanted a different experience and I found these guys. They are GREAT. They hook you up with everything you need. They do recommend that you bring your own pedals (if you have them) and bike shoes. My husband%26#39;s bike was a titanium framed bike just out of the box. They go in groups of about 7 and take different routes throughout the island. The day my husband went, they went to an area referred to as ';Up Country'; and he estimates that it was maybe around 45 miles. I didn%26#39;t think it could be done, but they kicked his behind and he loved every mile of it. He found that even if you just want to rent a bike and trek out on your own, Maui seemed to be very bike friendly. Thought I would pass this on to anyone who was interested.

    Not your usual biking adventure

Thanks you so much for posting this information. I was searching the web site

for cycling information regarding a trip to

Maui in September when my husband will be

running a marathon there. Cycling is my forte and the ';downhill'; tours sounded too

tourisy and lacking the workout I crave. Did

you husband find any spinning classes while

    in Maui?

    Not your usual biking adventure

Was glad to be of help. As for the spinning classes, hmmm, no, we don%26#39;t know of any unless maybe some of the spas/gyms at some of the resorts would have had some. I was never able to get him interested in spinning classes because he can%26#39;t stand the idea of biking for that long and not going anywhere. (Laughing) I even offered to set him up with a tv and a refrigerator. Sorry I couldn%26#39;t be of help there. Hope you guys have a great time. Let me know if you do a trip with GoCyclingMaui. Like I said, my husband really loved it and it was definitely NOT a tourist trip. Good Luck

P.S. They have a website gocyclingmaui.com. I think you will be happy with what you read and see.

I spin at the new Powerhouse Gym in Kihei. They have new Spinners and Johnny G instructors. Classes are 6 or 6:30 am and T-W-TH at 5:30. They have day and week visitor passes. Maui Fitness Plus, also in Kihei has several spin classes a day, but it is hard to get a bike there.

Thanks for your information on the spinning

classes in Kihei. Can both gyms accomodate my SPD compatible shoes?

  • To bike or not to bike?

I am really torn about whether to bike down Haleakala or not.

1.) we like biking and do it alot around home, weather permitting

2.) no way in Heck will I get up at (4am or whatever it is) on my vacation. NO sunrise is worth that to us (parents of 4 yr old and 1 yr boys)....but I see the Haleakala Bike Company has an express tour leaving at 9

3.) we have two days open and I thought we might use both for Hana. We are staying in Makawao, so it will take no time for us to get going on the Hana hwy but we are explorers and love water, so we could potentially take 2 days...or cut into one of those days for the bike down tour.

At this point, the crater isn%26#39;t a huge draw for us and we may skip it. Is that wrong? How long can it take to get down Haleakala?? Is it a ';must do';??

    Maholo

    The Gregoires

FWIW, our travel agent has a large credit for us that we need to use up so I would like to decide BEFORE we go and have them use some of our credit to pay for the tour...

To bike or not to bike?

    Hello Gregories,

I am not hard to please and I wasn%26#39;t pleased with a bike ride down the mountain. It left a lot to be desired. I%26#39;d skip it and do something else, to be totally honest.

    Have fun!

To bike or not to bike?

Great, thanks for your candor - I think we WILL skip it...

    Ko Olina to Waikiki (Distance/Time)

I was wondering what the driving time is from Ko Olina to Waikiki? We will be staying at the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club. We have children 11,8,3 and all ready know that we will be making that trek quite often. Possibly not quite as often as we think!:) Thanks in advance for your response.

    Ko Olina to Waikiki (Distance/Time)

    Hello ltmc,

We just returned from a stay at the JW Ko Olina %26amp; it was a 35 minute drive to Honolulu/Waikiki.

The biggest challenge is to avoid major traffic times as we heard that can be brutal. We were told not to drive between 7-9AM %26amp; to return either before 2-2:30PM or after well supper (7:30pm/8pm).

Just to let you know there is a town called Kapolei which is a 8-10 minute drive from Ko Olina that offers a few restaurants at much better prices as well as a Safeway.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris

    Ko Olina to Waikiki (Distance/Time)

Its 27 miles of mostly freeway driving, and in theory it should take you about half an hour. However, the traffic in the H-1 Freeway corridor can be beyond belief during rush hour (it is one of Honolulu%26#39;s best kept secrets)...

And, it is SEVERE...town-bound, towards Honolulu in the AM from about 6 to 9; and, home-bound, towards the exploding suburbs of Central Oahu and Ewa (where Ko Olina is) from about 3:30 to 6:30 PM. During those periods expect the drive to take at least almost an hour and maybe as long as 1.5 hours.

Realistically, Honolulu, like any big city, is congested most of the time nowadays...too many cars and too little pavement.

Parking can be tough in Waikiki unless you are willing to pay to park in a hotel garage. The best street parking is along the Ala Wai at the ';back'; (inland or ';mauka';) side of Waikiki, or along Kalakaua Avenue in Kapiolani Park.

You really don%26#39;t need to go into Waikiki very much...the beach there is only so-so and crowded (far inferior to others on the island), and there is great shopping at Ala Moana and the Ward Centers, which have plenty of parking and are located outside the resort district.

Don%26#39;t forget to explore Downtown Honolulu with its Capitol, financial, historic and Chinatown areas...one of the world%26#39;s most beautiful, diverse, clean, safe, compact and pleasant walking towns.

Thanks for the information. I%26#39;m also wondering if there is a Jack-in-the-box near the KoOlina-maybe by the 10 minute away area? It%26#39;s a family joke and would make my Mom laugh. Thanks!!

There%26#39;s one in Kapolei on Farrington Hwy...so mayber 5 miles or so.....

    Dinner on the beach

I hear the Dinner for two on the beach is wonderful.. has anyone else done this and is it worth the $200 + ? If you have had this dinner should we opt for the 3,4 or 5 courses

Thanks in advance for any info

    Dinner on the beach

Depends on the experience you want and what you want to make of it.

Hubby and I did carry out dinner from Honokowai deli (awesome awesome food). Dinner was $19 for the two of us, and we ate it on the beach while watching a beautiful sunset. Didn%26#39;t bring a bottle of wine with us, but if we had, it would have been wonderful.

For the premier dining experience, yes, you are looking at north of $200.

    Dinner on the beach

Scuba girl, What a great idea! I guess it is what you make it and that sounds wonderful...

I planned dinner on the beach with Tableside Chefs 3 yrs ago and it was $300 plus tip, the food was very good considering the chef only had a cooler and a small propane stove; first time (probably the last) I%26#39;ve had a pan fried filet mignon, but it was good!

If you are looking for something intimate like this look into ';Dinner under the stars'; at the Sheraton. I was able to alter the menu a little bit and it was fabulous. They have a few different places on their property that you can request. Send them an email and they will call you and arrange everything. My wife still speaks of this night as it was yesterday, one of our best moments on the island. I sent my parents there last year and I had arranged leis for them and they loved it.
