need advice for honeymoon

Im not sure if anyone can really help me out on this. But I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, which means i have an intolerance to gluten. That makes eating out very risky for me.

So here is where my questions come in...

i need to stay at a condo type resort in maui...anyone have suggestions...i would like it relatively %26#39;romantic%26#39; since its for my honeymoon,

also can anyone recommend restaurants that they have been too that catered to their %26#39;special%26#39; food needs?

need advice for honeymoon

Aloha!

My wife has MANY food allergies. I suggest you stay in a studio or 1 bedroom unit at the Whaler...it is in the center of Kaanapali beach, is upscale, you get a full kitchen, and a nice beach. Most of the HIGH end restaurants like Roy%26#39;s Longhi%26#39;s, IO%26#39;s, etc will do a meal for you...JUST tell them from the get-go what your limits are.

  • Which island(s)?

Hi- have a few questions.. need the experts!!

We want to do a trip but don%26#39;t have the time or money to handle more than 2 islands. For us, Oahu is a given because of seeing Pearl Harbor. I had originally thought we would go there, to Maui, and the Big Island. We now think 2 islands will need to be the budget. I would want to see pretty flowers and foilage, nice water and beach, and whales. My hubby is interested in the volcano and stars.

We have 2 teen boys. Your recommendations, please.

    Which island(s)?

I%26#39;d do Maui, especially with two teens. Plenty of things to interest them, plenty of pretty flowers and foliage for you, Haleakala for your husband, lots of great beaches, and whales if you%26#39;re there in season and are lucky.

    Which island(s)?

Is Haleakala an active volcano with lava like the Big Island? Do they have a star program?

    Thanks.

Not active, but you have no guarantee of seeing live lava on the Big Island. I don%26#39;t know about a star program.

Oahu for sure if you%26#39;ve never been, for exactly the reason you said.

To say there is no guarantee of seeing active lava on the Big Island is technically true, but the odds of NOT seeing lava are pretty low. There have been relatively few pauses in the current eruption since 1983. Check out his site for current eruption information. hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/main.html I%26#39;ve done a hike out to the lava on 4 occasions. It%26#39;s a lot of work right now due to the terrain and distance, but it%26#39;s the most memorable experiences of my many trips to Hawaii.

Maui is certainly a great choice to see foilage, water and beaches, and whales (in season). Haleakala is of course not erupting. There is a bit more to do with teens as well. Having said that, we took our 2 pre-teen kids a couple of times recently, and both times to the Big Island.

It basically comes down to this for us. Maui is great, but the nicer hotels are jammed together at Wailea and Kaanapali, and we like to get away from the crowds, so we like the Big Island.

    %26gt;%26gt; ...the odds of NOT seeing lava are pretty low. There have been relatively few pauses in the current eruption since 1983.%26lt;%26lt;

Except that most of the time the lava has been traveling to the ocean via underground lava tubes, so all you get to see is the steam cloud. You might get lucky and have a surface outbreak within hiking distance. You might be able to see the glow from Pu%26#39;u O%26#39;o after dark from Chain of Craters Road, or from an overflight. I respectfully submit that luck has more to do with it than the length of the current eruption.

Still, there%26#39;s a lot that%26#39;s of interest at HVNP. I%26#39;m just not sure it would keep teen boys engaged Hilo side, and it%26#39;s a long drive from Kona and back.

Agreed. I%26#39;ve been lucky to have abundant breakouts when I%26#39;ve been.

Guess I need to make better offerings to Madame Pele. Although she did cooperate for one trip. I%26#39;d love to be there when she really blows her top, though.

the only real way you will see flowiing lava is from an aircraft and it will be in short stretches and through windows of the tube...it aint like the travel channel film.

The park has closed surface travel 1/4 mile to 1 mile away from the flows. that area is very unstable and not safe to be in... even by experts...

For star gazing the Mauna kea visitor center is the best in the state except for Kwills back yard scope. ( you will find all the stuff on Big island with cheaper prices and less people..... Maui is the most expensive of all islands

It does require more driving in the big island...

I got lucky a couple of trips ago with a nice surface outbreak. Haven%26#39;t yet done the Mauna Kea thing; next trip, maybe.

Kwils, set up your %26#39;scope. I%26#39;ll be there.

Appreciate your help- trying to discuss these things while hubby and I have some time off over the holidays...Probably going to go with Oahu and the BI this trip because of wanting to do Mauna Kea...Hopefully I will still get to see beautiful flowers and foilage. Considering staying at Mauna Kea or Hapuna.

Hapuna has two queen size beds which is what we need. Are these resorts ';pretty';- will I get my flower and beach time here? Does anyone know how the activities are? Thanks again..

    Weather in late June?

What is the weather like in late June? I assume mid 80s - what about rain or other bad weather? What is the water temperature - warm for snokleing? Favorite snorkling spots in the islands?

    Weather in late June?

We were there June 21-June 30 last year. Weather was great - upper 80s in the daytime and upper 70s at night.

Lots of people were complaining it was ';hot';..but perfectly comfortable to us Texans used to the 100s in June :-)

The trade winds blew constantly and we never had the AC on the condo. Did need it in the car in the traffic, though.

Going again this year June 20 - June 29th. Yipee Skippee!!

    Weather in late June?

Hot, hot, hot...So hot that sometimes we needed an umbrella!!! It%26#39;s great though.

For snorkelling, go to Hanauma bay...

Need Help w/Finding Place to Stay

I want to stay in Lahaina, since it seems farely close/midway to both South Maui and West Maui.

We will be staying in Hana for 3 nights, but have that covered.

Has anyone stayed at the Makai Inn in Lahaina? If yes, your thoughts??

What about the Wai Ola Vacation Paradise? Does it have an ocean view and how is it?

Not into big resorts or huge high rises.

    Thanks!!

Need Help w/Finding Place to Stay

Aloha! How about trying something different - other types of accommodations? Check out this website for all kinds of types of places in Lahaina area: www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/maui Maybe you will find out just what you need. I know I like finding something unique and am not interested in the mega resorts either. Good luck! Lahaina is a fun town! :)

Need Help w/Finding Place to Stay

we always stay at the makai inn when we go to maui. it is very cozy and family operated. the units are all the same size, compact little kitchen units. no tv or phone or maid service. you can hear the ocean waves. all the units face a jungle-like courtyard and the ocean. no sandy beach there. a sitting area is by the water.

My wife and I are the owners of Wai Ola Vacation Paradise. Two of our units have great ocean views... The Kuuipo Room and the Malanai Suite. All the rooms are different. Reading the reviews on tripadvisor, as well as the descriptions on the website, should give you a good idea.

  • snorkeling at Capt.Cook - afternoon tour info needed

We will be on the BI for only one day :( and our morning will be taken up with an airplane tour over the island. We wanted to snorkel Captain Cook in the afternoon but are having trouble matching up what we want with what we are finding available. Can anyone help? What we want is:

    1. a tour which will have us back to the airport by 6:00 pm (plane leaves at 7 pm);

    2. boat with easy access in and out of the water (3 in our party of 6 have some weight issues);

    3. tour which runs on a Friday (the day we will be on the island) which rules out Fairwinds snack cruise.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as we need to book ahead since we have a group of six traveling together. Thanks! Azul_waters

snorkeling at Capt.Cook - afternoon tour info needed

That would be Dolphin Discoveries, which has a noon tour for 3 hours and runs every day.

Or you might try Sea quest too......

snorkeling at Capt.Cook - afternoon tour info needed

Thanks! After checking out their websites I only had one concern. Do you think someone who is overweight can pull themselves up into this type of watercraft? Three of our group would have a problem if so. Thanks again!

if you can climb out of a swimming pool by a swim ladder then yes... if not......no.

My boyfriend and I did the morning SeaQuest raft trip a few years ago -- it was awesome! there were only spots for 6 on the boat and the captiain was the best we%26#39;ve had on any tour we%26#39;ve done (4 of the islands). The only downside is 1)cover from the sun and 2)going to the potty...well, there is a big toliet you could swim in, but i%26#39;ll leave it at that. ;-) The big boats offer that (but more crowds) and the food on the SeaQuest wasn%26#39;t really that great, but we didn%26#39;t care, we wanted less crowds.

I don%26#39;t remember getting into and out of the raft an issue at all. I%26#39;m not a skinny chicken.

Snorkeling Captain Cook was sooooooo beautiful! I can%26#39;t wait to do it again one day. I haven%26#39;t seen more beautiful underwater coral anywhere else in Hawaii, and I%26#39;ve snorkeled a lot on Maui, Kauai, Oahu, and the BI. They also took us to Place of Refuge, which you could easily drive to, but dropped us further out where it would have been a long swim. The snorkeling there is incredible, too. The best in all of Hawaii those two spots, i%26#39;m jealous, have fun!

the easiest in and out of a boat is on Fairwinds.....larger group but bathroom. burgers and better comfort.... than any other.

Kauai one day trip from waikiki

    Hi people,

I want to see the canyon at Kauai and I ask the Question about the one day tour being good enough to see the main part of this Island? Has anybody done the deed of the tour? Any real time Advisors?

    NWF/Sydney

Kauai one day trip from waikiki

One day, oh my. You don%26#39;t know what you%26#39;re missing. I%26#39;d leave Waikiki for Kauai.

Kauai one day trip from waikiki

Personally I%26#39;d spend that one day exploring something I haven%26#39;t seen on Oahu. To me the cost and time associated with a one day inter-island trip to ANY island is just not worth the sacrifice of my precious vacation time and dollars. I try to coordinate my inter-island visits so that at least one leg of the visit is in conjunction with the start or ending of my stay. That way I%26#39;m only stealing time from a day that is already filled with travel rather than from a day I could be enjoying time in paradise.

I agree with dfarr. Although I much prefer Kaua%26#39;i to Oahu, it%26#39;s hardly worth the expense and travel time for one day. Waimea Canyon is spectacular and well worth seeing, but you%26#39;d hardly be seeing the ';main part'; of the island.

Better yet, if it%26#39;s only for a day, why not do an airplane/helicopter tour and get a good overview. You%26#39;ll see the canyon, and lots of things you wouldn%26#39;t see going straight from the airport to the canyon.

If all you can spare is the one day for Kauai, hawaiiactivities.com has a 15 hour package for $287 that flies you over and buses you to the Waimea Canyon and several other scenic areas and includes a boat trip up the Wailua River. They stop in Poipu for lunch. It would give you a nice little overview of Kauai, if all you have is one day. I would do it, if it was my only choice to see the beautiful gem that Kauai is.

Unfortunately, I don%26#39;t think the tour would include any of the North shore sights, which even just the drive up the coast would be awesome for you. You might want to shop around for a tour that does include the North shore. (I%26#39;d trade in the stop at the Russian Fort for a quick looksee even just a ways up the East shore even.) The North shore is so lush, it would be a shame to visit Kauai and not see that part.

  • Need a recommendation for a 2BR condo

Four of us (myself, wife and 2 adult children) will be staying in the Kona area for 6 days in April and want a 2BR condo. We are looking at Outrigger at Kanaloa (has a restaurant, but no A/C) or Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff (A/C but no restaurant). Other options we are aware of are one of the ResortQuest properties. We would like to be on the ocean in a clean, relatively upscale, well-maintained, comfortable condo resort. Do we really need A/C at the end of April? Does anyone have recommendations for specific properties? Thanks!

Aloha, Brian. Thanks for the info - actually Kona by the Sea is one of the three we%26#39;re looking at, along with Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona and Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff. The brochures and online descriptions show them to be very similar, so I%26#39;m looking for advice to help separate them. Maybe there%26#39;s no real difference except appearance. Do you know if one is better than the rest for a particular reason? Thanks.

    Good BnB in Maui

    Hi,

We are a family of 3, a couple with a 4 year old daughter and want to celebrate our 10 year anniversary in Maui this month.

We would like a Bed n Breakfast place near the beaches. From the pictures the Sugar Beach and Camaole beach look nice. Any recommendations? We want a full kitchen (i.e., stoves etc, not just microwave).

    Thanks,

    ANA

    Good BnB in Maui

I don%26#39;t think you want a bed and breakfast, look into a condo instead. You will have lots more room for your daughter and a full kitchen and private bathroom. If you want resort stuff look into the condos in Kihei or Kaanapali - read some of the other posts to get ideas such as Whaler and Embassy suites. We prefer the quiet of an ocean front unit in Honokowai at one of several complexes there - Mahina Surf, Polynesian Shores, etc. These have pools and laundry facilities and are ocean front.

    Good BnB in Maui

By the way, some folks love Sugar Beach, others complain about seaweed and bad smells along there. It is a shallow area that might be better for little kids.

You also mention Kamaole beaches. We have stayed at Kamaole Sands and other complexes in Kihei and the beaches there are great for little kids, Kam III even has a playground. Kamaole Sands had a kiddie pool and two jacuzzis in addition to the big pool, in unit washers and dryers and gas bbqs on the premises. It is much bigger and a bit more expensive than the smaller complexes but a close walk to lots and to the beach.

I can recommend Steve and Tonia Baney%26#39;s mauicourtyardcottages.com. I stayed for quite a long time and would have loved to stay longer but they were booked. Good luck, it%26#39;s a great place, close to everything and a hot tub and barbeque in your back yard. Very clean and every thing you need for the water (and games, vcr/dvd, tv).

Good luck, hope they have an availability for you.

Sysie949-thanks for the address for BnB in Maui. We will be in Maui in Sept. %26#39;06 and are trying to locate decent places to stay that aren%26#39;t resorts. We%26#39;ll look into your recommendation.

stay away from Sugar beach, extremely windy most of the day and not clean waters at all.

The Kamaole beaches ( 1,2,3) are all wonderful family beaches.

Most B and B%26#39;s do not offer full kitchens, but there are many condo choices in South Kihei ( the sunniest spot on Maui) and also Wailea ( firther souht, upscale but deals to be had). Stay away from North side of Kihei, dirty waters.

Check out VRBO website ( vacation rentals by owner) for tons of options.

  • Honeymooners in Maui - Looking for suggestions

I must say it is very, very confusing to try and pick a place to stay in Maui. My soon-to-be-wife and I are going to be going to Maui from April 9th to the 16th and I%26#39;ve been trying to figure out the best place to stay. Right now the front runner is Kihei Surfside condos by Resort Quest. We%26#39;re from Chicago, so have next to no reliable info.

We like the idea of a condo, but are having a tough time figuring out what is a good location. Ideally we would like to have a partial ocean view, access to a beach and a clean room. I%26#39;ve heard rumors that there are problems with bugs and cockroaches. Obviously, we want to avoid that at all costs.

All suggestions are welcomed and anybody who has stayed at the Kihei Surfside with comments would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks!

Buy the Maui Revealed book.. it has great reviews of the different places to stay at well as activities... we will be staying at the Four Seasons during our time in Maui for our honeymoon in Sept %26#39;06.

Honeymooners in Maui - Looking for suggestions

We stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani on our honeymoon, and I can%26#39;t say enough about this place!!! It is a suite property with villas down by the beach. Rooms are oceanview with views to Molokini Crater. Beautiful place with great service.

Be sure to let everyone know you are on your honeymoon when travelling and making reservations, you never know what upgrades or extras you will receive.

Here%26#39;s an aerial view of the Sufside:

    www.wizardpub.com/maui/mrkiheisurfside.html

I think the views and property are nice enough but the pool area is unremarkable and teh room are mostly adequate. Built in the 70s.

    Aloha!

have you looked at the Maui Kai? You could get an oceanfront junior suite(studio), and the property is very nicely located and quiet!

    Bryan Brown

    BBrown9825@aol.com

Instead of a condo, my wife and I stayed at the ';Honeymooner'; cottage in Spreckelsville, not far from the airport in Kahului. Very few people stay on the north side but this place is wonderful and private. It is right on the water and the only issue is jet noise. However, at night, we closed the windows and turned on the A/C or fan and their was no noise.

The location is convenient to services not found on the south side yet the drives to the resorts on the south side were short and easy. It%26#39;s on the road to Hana but long before the curvy portion and Spreckelsville is an upscale neighborhood.

An unbelievable setting and it is booked through hawaiibound.com

I would also STRONGLY consider the Grand Wailea. It is an amazing hotel with a lot of nice features. I do agree with the others who are leaning towards the Fairmont and Four Seasons- this area of the island is more desirable (in my opinion) than the Lahaina area- far too touristy.

Have fun and enjoy your trip- Maui is amazing.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding!!! We are also going to be Honeymooners on Maui and found paradise at the Ho%26#39;oilo House outside of Lahaina. Check it out -- looks like heaven.

    Hello there,

I have stayed in the Kaanapali Shores Condos three times in Kaanapali. They have a good location. The beach isnt that great. (Narrow) But you dont have far to go to get to Lahaina and Whalers Village. There are washers and dryers in the condo units and child care, should you need? The Sheratin is great for beach location. Been there a couple of times. They are an excelent locaton if you like to snorkle. Although you can stay anywhere and visit '; Black Rock'; just outside Sheratin%26#39;s back door. I%26#39;ve seen octupus, turtles, eels and other exotic swiming creaturs there. In Kehei, Maui Hill is nice without going bonkers on spending. I took my family of 10 there two years ago. 3 three bedroom units.Didnt break me( I have been very blessed ) and there were a lot of things to do. (I just realised how that sounds.. I am an adverage eveyday hard working citizen, just like everyone else.) The concierge was very helpful in booking outings for us. . It%26#39;s not on the beach but very close. Kehei has a lot of upscale things to do ( night life , shopping ect) But even if I stay in Kaanapali I go to La Paruse Bay in Kehei,to snorkle. ( Very Clean ) I have been there on a very limited budget and with a few bucks to spare, and with out too many limitations. It all depends on you personal likings and budget. You can have a wonderful time there even if you stay in a campground. Like some of my friends have done. We dont spend a whole lot of time in our rooms so it%26#39;s not so important sometimes.

    Quote!

I would also STRONGLY consider the Grand Wailea. It is an amazing hotel with a lot of nice features. I do agree with the others who are leaning towards the Fairmont and Four Seasons- this area of the island is more desirable (in my opinion) than the Lahaina area- far too touristy.

For a honeymoon. You cant go wrong! You wont believe your eyes.

    Hi,

We stayed at Grand Wailea for our honeymoon and were very happy but lots of kids.

We are going back in January and have decided to stay at the Four Seasons. I think it will be a little more relaxing and pampering. Overall I would highly rec. Wailea. The beaches are great, fabulous golf across the street, great places to dine and shops within walking distance (Wailea shops I belive).

I would highly rec. renting a car. For our honeymoon we waited until we arrived (not sure if we wanted a car)and were lucky to find Maui Dive shop and rented a Jeep. This time we have rented a Jeep in advance from a national company at the airport.

    A couple recommendations:

Brunch at the Hyatt overlooking the pond and waterfall. (approx 30 min. drive but worth it)

    Snorkle trip

Day touring the island in your Jeep.

By the way we booked via Classic Vacations and have been very pleased.

    rental car Car suggestions

We will be driving all over the Big Island during our 8 day stay, what kind of car would be best to rent for this area?

    rental car Car suggestions

Hi CaliGirl, Probably the best type of vehicle to rent for driving on the Big Island is an SUV. They are a little more expensive than a sedan or minivan, but worth the extra cost. The higher ground clearance and 4WD make it where you can go where other vehicles can go.

    rental car Car suggestions

Well a 4x4 do have more clearance... and that would be fine for driving on lava and dirt roads. The problem is that ALL the rental car companies except, Harper, all say in your contract that their cars and 4x4s can not be driven off a paved road.....

yup thats the deal..... ask your rental car company direct questions..... they will try to avoid it but on your contract in Kona, it states '; not to be driven of paved road, and many prohibit south point and saddle road..

In truth it is a waste of your money to rent a 4x4 that cant be used legaly here.

Rent the minimum and save... if you want to drive on dirt or to Mauna Kea then rent a 4x4 for that specific day..... maybe 2 days out of 8.

The savings on the economy car will pay for the splurge......

How much does a vehicle from Harper cost for the day?

    Thanks!

I%26#39;d go with a convertable unless you live in an area with alot of sun.....if you just want to get from point A to B then yes, go with whatever is least expensive.

You do not need a 4X4 as was pointed out, most companies won%26#39;t let them off road anyway and they get lousy gas milage.

I just called them yesterday. It was about $875/week (with taxes) for a 7-person SUV in Kona in March. You can go on their website--harpershawaii.com for an instant quote also.

Like most everything else, ';it depends';. Number of people, amount of baggage you might be hauling, and where you want to go.

SUV%26#39;s can be nice if you want to try to access some of the inaccessible roads on the island. However, you will be violating your agreement.

However, having rented cars, pickups, vans, and SUV%26#39;s on the island, I%26#39;d prefer a car - especially if you plan on touring the island. There are a lot of twisty roads on the island, so a good handling vehicle can be much more enjoyable to drive.

Also, the trunk of a car does give you a somewhat hidden place to store your luggage, unlike a van or SUV. This might be important if you have a red-eye flight home and have to check out before noon. Also good if you are staying in different places on your trip.

Thank so much for all of the tips ! I think I will go with the convertable. This will be my first trip to Hawaii and I am super excited ... I cant wait!

  • Maui Trip Report 12/30-1/6 (LONG!)

We just returned from an absolutely fantastic week on Maui. We left Phoenix on 12/30 at 11:30 am for a nonstop flight to OGG on America West. When we arrived in Maui it was around 3 pm. We collected our luggage, and picked up our rental car (I will not rent from Budget again; more on that later). Since we stayed in a condo we decided to make some of our own meals to save $$- but I didn%26#39;t want to spend a lot of time cooking. So I ordered 6 meals from a company called Dish; they are located near the airport, and they provide fully prepared meals that are frozen and ready to go. We found all of the meals to be very good, and very easy to make. We also stopped at Safeway in the Lahaina Cannery Mall to pick up some more snacks, POG (YUM!), alcohol, etc. By the time we got to our condo, at the Napili Shores the sky was darkening. I was very happy with our condo unit, #G-155. It was in the third building back from the ocean, but it still had a wonderful ocean view (I was glad not to have an ocean front room, as the sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks was pretty loud when the surf was up, even in our room). We rented through a private owner, and the unit was nicely stocked, and very clean. And considering it was during high season we were able to rent it for an excellent price.

This was our second trip to Maui, and we really wanted to relax, so we did not do a whole lot of activities. We spent a lot of time sunning, reading, and swimming on Napili Bay, which was just as beautiful as I remembered. The weather was pretty good; Tuesday was absolutley gorgeous (it was warm and so clear; there were no clouds over Molokai). Wed. and Thurs. were very windy. Up in Napili there were a few rain showers, but nothing that lasted too long. And the short rain showers produced pretty rainbows :).

Although we made a few meals in the condo, we also visited some good restaurants. We had breakfast at the Gazebo, although I cheated and got it to-go, and we ate it on the lanai, which had just as beautiful of a view (It was nice to by pass the long line, although we would have eaten in the restaurant if my boyfriend was awake and ready to go). We had lunch at Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina, and we both enjoyed our food. It was pretty cheap, and it was fun to eat food that is not readily available at home. This restaurant has a pretty view of the ocean. Another great lunch was at Hula Grill on Kaanapali Beach. We just got sandwiches, but they were very, very good with a great view and great service (the only downside was that the table next to us had a toddler who screamed for at least 10 min. straight; I didn%26#39;t understand why one of the parents did not take her away from the table). One night we went to dinner at Kobe%26#39;s Japanese Steakhouse in Lahaina. This was a fun teppanyaki/sushi bar. Very good sushi, and a lot of food. Not bad prices either, but not super cheap. We had 3 plates of sushi, an appetizer, 2 alcoholic drinks, 2 bowls of rice, 2 bowls of soup, and split a teppanyaki dinner for a little over $90 (including a 20% tip). We couldn%26#39;t even eat it all. This restaurant doesn%26#39;t have a view. We also ate breakfast at Lahaina Coolers, which we thought was very good, and not very expensive. This restaurant is open-air, and looks out on Dickenson Street in Lahaina. For excellent, cheap food we visited Honokowai Okazuya Deli. We actually ate there twice, and probably would have eaten there more if it hadn%26#39;t been closed for the New Years Holiday (on 12/31, 1/1, 1/2). Two people can fill up on a lot of food for under $20.

One paid activity we did was a whale watch with the Pacific Whale Foundation. It was a nice trip, and it was fun to see whales doing different things. The only downside to the trip was that on that day it was extremely windy, and the water was very choppy. Luckily neither of us get seasick.

On our last day we also went to the Maui Ocean Center. It is a little pricey at $21 per adult, but we both enjoyed seeing the ocean life native to Hawaii (my boyfriend also especially enjoyed the shark tunnel).

After the ocean center we visited the I%26#39;ao Valley, which was absolutley beautiful. It was a hot day on Friday, so it was very refreshing to get up to higher elevation and enjoy the cool breezes.

A few things I would have changed:

Our flight home from Maui did not depart until 11:59pm, but we had to check out of our condo at 11 am. I wish I had just spent the $$ to reserve the condo until 1/7. Driving around for 12 hours was exhausting. We drove from Napili down to Kaanapali, then went into Lahaina for lunch, and continued down to Maalea to visit the Ocean Center. Then we went up to the I%26#39;ao Valley, and then drove down to Wailea, where we read on the beach for a while. Then we went up to Kahului, saw a movie and did some shopping. I enjoyed all the activity, but I would have enjoyed a nap at the Napili Shores just as much.

I will also never rent a car from Budget again. When we rented the car we were told that there would be a $300 hold put on my debit card. It should be noted that we paid for the whole trip with cash that we had available at the time. We are both young, and we don%26#39;t use credit cards, except for emergencies ( I am almost done paying off the balance of the one card I got when I was 18). Well, Budget messed up and put a hold of $800 on my debit card. After spending quite a bit on food and groceries I called the bank to discover I had $99 left in my bank account on the evening of our second day of vacation (12/31), and $120 in my wallet. Since it was a holiday weekend Budget and the bank were unable to reverse the hold until 1/2. Luckily between my boyfriend and I we had enough money to enjoy our vacation as planned, but it was not fun to spend 3 hours of vacation on the phone between the bank and Budget to get the error fixed. On the good side, we did get a totally free rental car for the week, and the manager on duty was very helpful, but I would have preferred to just pay for it and not have any problems. This may seem like a simple error on the part of Budget, but this is the second time we have had a problem renting from Budget (We had an issue with being overcharged by Budget when we rented a car in San Diego). So, in the future I will use other companies.

Maui is a wonderful place to visit, and I cannot wait for another opportunity to travel there. All of you that have upcoming trips are so lucky! The Hawaiian Islands truly are paradise!!! (P.S. Sorry this is so long!)

    Maui Trip Report 12/30-1/6 (LONG!)

    Hi can you give me more information on ';DISH';

    Please.

    Maui Trip Report 12/30-1/6 (LONG!)

    Hello :)

You can find more info on dishsimple.com. It contains a menu and prices. I don%26#39;t know how many people are traveling with you, but my boyfriend and I ordered 6 of the half dish meals. It was plenty of food for both of us (and he eats a lot). I would use this company again when we return to Maui.

Good information on Dishsimple. I will check that site out. How was your flight on America West? We are planning to go in June using the same airlines.

The flights with America West went fine. On the way to Maui we checked in quickly curbside (in Phoenix). America West does not serve any complimentary food on flights to Hawaii, but you can purchase sandwiches and snacks for $2-$5. The planes we were on were 757%26#39;s, I think (3 seats, aisle, 3 seats),but the seats did not have individual ';entertainment centers.'; Both flights left on time and arrived on time. A 5 1/2 hour flight is not fun in economy, but America West was the cheapest and the flight was non-stop; I would fly to Maui with them again.

I%26#39;ve refused to rent from Budget since the time we rented two cars for a family group, and they tried to charge us for the ';second'; driver.

Thanks 985. We made our reservations months ago. I%26#39;ve never flown with them and I liked the fact that they flew non stop from Phoenix. Glad someone else brought up Budget car rental. I was thinking of going with them but now have changed my mind. We will also be renting two cars since there will be seven of us going.

I guess I shouldn%26#39;t be surprised that the Phoenix to Maui flight doesn%26#39;t have complimentary meals. It%26#39;s frustrating though, as you would think that a flight THAT long would be a little bit better in terms of service than a flight under 3-4 hours long. I%26#39;ve learned to just take snacks on the plane with me though. Not much else you can do unless you want to pay for airline food (not that it%26#39;s great anyway). :)

I had read beforehand that America West no longer had complimentary meals, so we had a big breakfast before leaving Phoenix, and we brought a lot of snacks. I am not a fan of airline food anyways, but the $5 sandwiches at least looked better than the food you used to get for free.

So sorry to hear about your nightmare with Budget. I%26#39;ve never had an issue with them or any other car rental agency, but this is good to know for future reference. I generally prefer using my debit card as well when I vacation.....it%26#39;s so tempting to pull out a regular credit card at times though. I also understand that, depending on location, some car rental agencies will not accept certain debit cards. At any rate, a $500 mistake not in your favor is nothing to take lightly....I would have been furious.

we were pretty mad. luckily my boyfriend is very good with dealing with confrontations and problems like this, so he did all the talking. looking back i am glad that i only used my debit card; i LOVE vacations, but i am not willing to go into debt over one. our vacation was all paid for with cash, so i won%26#39;t be getting a bill in the mail in a few weeks :) i am sad about being home, so i am going to start planning our next vacation to cheer me up!

    Jack's Diving Locker

I made a trip to the Big Island during the Christmas-New Year week of 2005. I wanted to experience scuba diving and after checking out this forum and scouting for other scuba diving outfitters, I settled for Jack’s Diving Locker.

I did the introductory pool dive followed by the shore dive. My experience was unforgettable. The check-in process was very professional. I was hooked up with my instructor, Jim Humme. Jim walked me through the basics of diving, dos and don’ts and the possible risks. At first, those risks sounded scary and I wondered what I had signed up for. After about 15 minutes of verbal introduction, we got into the pool with the Scuba gear. I was introduced to underwater techniques for breathing, eardrum equalization, hand signs for under water communication etc etc. Jim was patient and put me at ease when I initially struggled breathing from the apparatus. He was encouraging and infused enough confidence that I soon found my self under 12 feet of water in their pool playing with some toys. I gradually gained confidence. The pool introduction lasted 45 minutes to an hour. All this while, Jim was diving along with me.

We hit the shore soon thereafter. We walked down the beach into the water. Once the water was waist high, we put on our flippers and dived…to about 35-40 feet. The experience was unforgettable. I guess this is the closest you get to being an astronaut! It is a whole new world out there.

Jim kept a close watch on me and repeated checked with me how I was doing. I had tough time maintaining my buoyancy…but it was a learning experience.

If you want to try scuba diving, I would certainly recommend Jack’s Diving Locker. Their pool+shore dive is a good starting point. If you have more time on hand, you could also try their boat dive (which I didn’t due to time constraints) They are a neat shop and rent good equipment. Happy diving!!

    Jack's Diving Locker

Nice post, and ALL beginners have a problem mastering their buoyancy, not just you. Now it%26#39;s time to re evaluate and think about becoming certified. The resort coarse, (also known as ';discover scuba';) must be repeated again at each destination before you would be allowed to dive with whoever offers diving there. It is an axcellent introduction to a new world as you have seen, but as only the basics get taught, it is a very temporary pass into the depths.

    Jack's Diving Locker

Jack%26#39;s is also great for snorkelers--we did the night Manta Ray snorkel/dive trip last year with them and had an awesome time. Their guides are wonderful, we were well taken care of and watched closely for safety, and I would highly recommend them--we will definitely go back to Jack%26#39;s.

I emailed them over a week ago regarding availability on their Manta Ray snorkel but have not heard from them. We are going to be on the BI Feb 11-18 and do not want to miss out on the opportunity to do this. Hope I hear from them soon so we can get it all set up.

  • What area to stay in Oahu for restaurants and nightlife?

I am planning a trip to Oahu in June. I want to stay near restaurants and nightlife. What is the best area in Oahu? Can anyone recommend a hotel on the beach for under $300 a night. Thanks.

    Mike

What area to stay in Oahu for restaurants and nightlife?

This is not directly on the beach, but a block or 2 from it. The Sheraton Princess Kauilani is a very nice hotel, walking distance to restaurants, nightlife and shopping.

What area to stay in Oahu for restaurants and nightlife?

One word - Waikiki! We stayed at the Radisson nearer the Kuhio end of Waikiki - it is actually a block off the beach, but very nice. Plenty of restaurants, shopping and nightlife in walkind distance.

    Best Snorkeling?

I%26#39;ll be visiting waikiki in February and was planning on going on Captain Bob%26#39;s Snorkel Cruise. Since we won%26#39;t be renting a car, is this the best organized snorkel tour or is there something better? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Best Snorkeling?

The best place to snorkel is Hanauma bay. You can easily take the bus there for about $2 per trip. For Honolulu, you really don%26#39;t need guided tours for most attractions. All attractions are tourist friendly, which means safe, bus accessible and entrance fees are reasonably priced. Just buy a bus pass and explore around the island on your own. If you are a Senior though, perhaps, a guided tour is better.

    Best Snorkeling?

Another option is getting the Go Hawaii Card which also includes a Hanauma Bay snorkeling tour. Also, the card includes a car rental if you purchase the card for more than three days. Depending on how long you%26#39;re staying and how many of the attractions listed, it might be beneficial. Hope that helps!

Snorkeling can be decent at Makai Research Pier.

First time visitors from UK. Any Entertainment...

My fiance and I are coming to the Sheraton Moana Waikiki to get married in October 2006. We are bringing with us both friends and family, therefore there will be a wide age range and we are looking for advice for things to do and places to go whilst we are there. We hope to do a Lu%26#39;au, shopping, drinking, dancing you name it we want to do it all. We have only 7 days in Honolulu so can anyone help advise us as to what are the best attractions, bars, resturants and entertainment.

    Thanks.

First time visitors from UK. Any Entertainment...

There is just too much to do to really respond to your post.

Once you arrive you will see rack upon rack of brochures, discount coupons and adverts for places to go.

Best recomendation, go with the flow and RELAX.

Since you are flying from so far, the one thing I would say to see is the Arizona memorial. Outside of that there are more activities than you can go in a year.

    Congrats on the upcoming nuptuals.

First time visitors from UK. Any Entertainment...

EmJayGin - congratulations! My recommendations would be:

    - Chill out for the first few days - it%26#39;ll take a while to get used to the humidity and time difference

    - Eat / drink at Dukes and Tikkis - both are very lively and fun

    - Watch a movie on the beach. Link: http://www.sunsetonthebeach.net/

    - Watch the fireworks on a Friday night

    - Hire a car for the day, or book a tour, and get out of Waikiki to see the rest of the island

    - If you like movies and/or the tv show Lost, visit Kuoala Ranch and do the Movie Tour (they filmed scenes from Lost, Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, to name but a few). They also do other activities, e.g ATV rides and horse riding

    - Watch the sunset in House Without A Key in the Halekulani - expensive but the entertainment is classy, and

    - Make your friends back home jealous by waving to them from the live webcam in front of the King Kahanamoku Statue, in the centre of Waikiki: Link: …honolulu.hi.us/cameras/…waikiki.htm

    Enjoy!

    Diamond Head transportation?

My boyfriend and I are hoping to squeeze in a hike up Diamond Head our last morning in Waikiki -- we need to leave for the airport for our flight to Maui by about 10:30. Would we better off taking the bus, which seems to run only about once every half hour, or grabbing a cab to Diamond Head? Does anyone recall how much a cab from the Kuhio end of Waikiki to Diamond Head is, and how easy it might be to get a cab back to the hotel once we%26#39;re done? I%26#39;m always looking for a bargain (the bus), but I%26#39;d rather pay a little extra for the peace of mind that we won%26#39;t be late getting back! Thanks...

    Diamond Head transportation?

I recommend using the bus, but you want to get there just after the 6:30am opening before the sun starts to beat down. The Bus No. 58 from Ala Moana Shopping Center which will drop you off at the craters inland. Also, if you need transportation. Also, if you%26#39;re going to be in Oahu for more than a day, I know the new Go Hawaii Card includes a tour to Diamond Head Crater as well as shuttle service, so if you%26#39;re going to do some of the other things on their list it may be worth it to get the value card.

    Diamond Head transportation?

We did the same thing on a recent visit and used a cab. It happened to be during a full moon so we arrived early enough to walk to the top before daylight and were able to watch the sunrise shortly after we got there. The driver gave us his cell phone number and we called him as we were hiking back down. He arrived a few minutes after we got back down to the parking lot. We still had a little time to kill so we asked him to swing by Punchbowl were we spent a few minutes walking around. We then went back to our hotel, checked out and took the hotel shuttle to the airport. I believe the total cab fare ran us around $35-$40 but it was worth it for the convenience it provided.

i was there 2 wks ago and we took the bus from queen kapiolani, which is across the street from the zoo,and returned by limo. he just happend to be driving back from droping some people off and offered to take us back to our hotel. we were so tired after the hike so we took the offer, it cost us $8 for myself, nephew, and my daugther.

  • Getting from airport to Waikiki hotels

A few people have mentioned the hassle of dealing with the shuttle from the Honolulu airport to the Waikiki hotels. If we don%26#39;t opt for the cheaper shuttle, should we reserve another service ahead of time or just get a cab once we arrive? Is there much of a difference in price between the van services (not limos) and cabs? We get into Honolulu at 3:30 p.m. HST, so I want to make the most of the rest of the day we have there -- thanks!

Getting from airport to Waikiki hotels

    Hi, soxgal8.

I%26#39;m a convert to taking cabs. I took shuttles for over twenty years. Then, several years ago, I was tired and took a cab. It was only about 23.00 (in non-rush hour).

With two of us, it was really cost effective, compared with the double tickets on the shuttle.

The older I get, the more I opt for convenience and lack of hassle.

Last time (Oct 2005), I even pre-arranged for a pickup, based on reviews in tripadvisor...ABC Limo...Melvin was really great...personally met our flight in baggage claim area, and helped with our luggage...flat rate, regardless of traffic...but of course it%26#39;s more than a cab.

One caution...if you take a cab, you will be on meter, and with rush hour, that can run up the tab considerably. If you%26#39;re arriving on a weekday, keep this in mind.

As for catching a cab at the airport, it%26#39;s easy. There are always lots of cabs lined up to pickup. They have an cab area across from the baggage claim where airport authorities ask your destination, and direct you to an appropriate cab...they do this to make sure only officially-approved cabs are picking up, and that people are accommodated in an orderly way, first come, first served. Some cabs charge a nominal fee extra for each bag, and some cabs charge extra if all your luggage won%26#39;t fit in the trunk. Have a wonderful visit!

Getting from airport to Waikiki hotels

    Rothea,

This is great info -- thanks! I thought about the $$$ difference between taking a cab and the double shuttle tickets and figured it%26#39;s probably worth the few extra dollars to get where we want to go right away.

PS. What time does rush hour usually start in Honolulu? I%26#39;m used to DC rush hour, which can be well underway by 4 p.m...

If you are traveling to Honolulu, taxis are the best way to go. The fare to the center of Waikiki is about $30.00. Make sure your drive stays off the freeway, traffic is heavy at all hours of the day. Their are services that offer flat rates from the airport to waikiki by appointment. Go on-line or try Frommers guide books, They have some really good recommendations.

I am going to Hawaii also from Dulles Airport.

When are you planning to go?

I already booked rental car since I want to drive to my hotel and drive around the Hawaii everyday.

Maybe I should become a taxi service while I am there.

I think renting car beats taxi or shuttle but if you have to use public transportation, I think taxi is worth it.

soxgal and kaesan...I didn%26#39;t realize that you guys were neighbors of mine (I%26#39;m a little south of Waldorf). I usually fly from Dulles, too. Anyway, rush hour starts early in Oahu... Most people try to go in early and get off early, so they can enjoy the outdoor life in that beautiful place. The traffic is REALLY bad when it%26#39;s bad.

Last October, we arrived about three-thirty and by the time we got our luggage and Melvin brought the car around to pick us up, rush hour was well underway. It seems to me nowdays that almost any time of day is bad taffic in Oahu...Taxibob is right on. But going-home rush hour can be especially troublesome, coming from the direction of the airport.

Oh, and just for frame of reference, in my research, flat rate pre-arranged airport pickup is about twice as much as an airport cab would be, if the cab doesn%26#39;t get stuck in traffic. It%26#39;s all in what you%26#39;re looking for. After a long day of travel, some people want to relax upon arrival. Airport pickup is wonderful for that. Nothing like a smiling face, greeting you by name and helping with your baggage...then bringing around a car just for you. If you%26#39;ve never been there before, it can alleviate some of the anxiety.

Whatever you choose, just remember you will be arriving in HAWAII..and you will be so enchanted when you get that first breath of air outside the plane...the tropical feel, the exotic scenery, the breeze on your face... it%26#39;s so wonderful. The logistics will take a back seat to your elation at being there. It%26#39;s a very user-friendly airport, with clearly marked areas for ground transport of all kinds, and rental car shuttles. You%26#39;ll have such a great time.

AND, even if you decide to take the shuttle to Waikiki, you can use the other hotel stops that may be before yours to help familiarize yourself with the layout of the Waikiki area... so it%26#39;s all good.

We are arriving at night from the east coast- VA also!!

I was thinking of arranging a limo service for my family of four. We are arriving around 7:30pm Hawaii time which will be the middle of the night for us after flying coach for a zillion hours.

Is it worth the extra over a taxi? They will also provide leis and I think my daughters would be very excited about that.

We are going to Honolulu at the end of the month. I have reserved us a rental car, but after reading about how handy the bus service is, and how most places will pick you up for activities I am reconsidering the car. Any advice?

I%26#39;d compare the cost of a cab to a limo. For me it was more cost effective to take a limo. Not a lot more and it sure was nice...

snorkeling tour, which on is the best

I am leaving for Maui in three weeks. I have read a lot about the different snorkeling tours and I am more confused then ever.

What I want to do and maybe I am asking for a lot, but here goes.

    To be able to snorkel.

To see some different ocean life (whales, turtles, and dolphins). It would make my nieces year if she say a dolphin in the ocean

Not sure Lanai or Molokai. Which is better?

Not too crowded on the boat.

Ugh. There are 7 of us going and just trying to have a great snorkeling trip for all.

So is it PWF, Trilogy, or Four Winds. Which tour is better. I am siding on PWF, but I am not sure.

    Any help would be great.

snorkeling tour, which on is the best

    Aloha,

Last winter we took the PWF Dolphin excursion to Lanai and it was great. It was one of the best whale watches we%26#39;ve ever had (been going to Maui for 20 years), we had the Dolphins swim with the boats and then went snorkeling off Lanai and there were some turtles there. By the way, you can go snorkeling off the shore and see tutles most places.

The not too many people on the boat deal is a tough one since you%26#39;re bringing 7 yourself, LOL!!

We%26#39;re going 2 weeks from today ourselves, maybe we%26#39;ll see you there.

snorkeling tour, which on is the best

We went on Paragon to Molokini and this was an excellent trip with less than 30 people if you want to avoid big crowd. We debated and researched all of your choices prior to our trip and were happy with our selection.

A group of 9 of us were in Maui over the Christmas break and had a great morning of snorkeling with Friendly Charters out of the Ma%26#39;alaea Harbor (Lani Kai boat name). We went to Molokini and Turtle town. While the water was a bit murky around the turtle spot we still had some fun up close encounters with turtles. Molokini Crater was incredible and clear. The boat had about 50 on it - more than usual given the busy holiday week... they say there are usually 20-30 on their outings. We saw lots of whales, turtles and other fish - no dolphins - sorry. The captain and crew were terrific and it was a great family trip for all ages. I was especially impressed with the attention my daughter received, who was nervous about swimming with the fishies. They spent time with her in the water and were just great! Very comfortable boat with breakfast and lunch included - snuba too, if you%26#39;re interested.

Talking to others on the island - word of warning - beware of any snorkeling trips in the afternoon - much cheaper - but the water is often churned up and visibility not good. Better to get up early and do the a.m. thing.

I went on the PWF snorkel that was to include both Molokini and Lanai and it was great. When we got to Molokini, there were jellyfish, so they took us to another spot off the coast of Maui. It was extremely lovely...lots undamaged coral, loads of beautiful fish and some friendly turtles. The snorkel off Lanai was nice as well, although a bit drifty. On our way back to port, we did also see a mother whale and her calf...and this was at a time when most of the whales were already making their way north (1st of May). The boat was not too crowded and the staff was great.

Go with PWF or Trilogy. I went with Trilogy, and they are a top notch company.

    We prefer the Gemini. www.geminicharters.com

passline68, are you anywhere near Norwalk?

Four Winds II for snorkeling/whalewatching combo to Molokini. Trilogy to Lanai.

If you wanna see dolphins, try the Kapalua Kai from Ka%26#39;anapali Beach to Honolua-we saw a ton of whales, dolphins, turtles, and a good snorkel trip.

Interisland Ferries (Maui, Oahu, Kaui & Hawaii) planned for...

The interisland ferries seem to be on schedule for a 2007 start date.

I am looking forward to this option for travel, as opposed to flying.

How is this going to impact tourism? Do locals want this? Is this a good idea? Any comments?

Interisland Ferries (Maui, Oahu, Kaui %26amp; Hawaii) planned for...

I have a feeling in order to turn a profit the ferry will either be as expensive as a plane ride or even more costly.

I am sure people will use it though, I know I would rather see dolphins or whales than clouds.

The competition will be nice unless it puts someone out of business.

Interisland Ferries (Maui, Oahu, Kaui %26amp; Hawaii) planned for...

The fares currently posted online seem to be reasonable, with an option for a discount for advance booking. The airfares I have been pulling up for Maui-Molokai and Maui-HNL have been pretty high. Plus, the option of renting one car for the whole period, instead of shorter more expensive rentals is also appealing.

As I understand it, they%26#39;re going to be costly and nowhere near as fast as people might think, at least from Kaua%26#39;i to Oahu.

I%26#39;m VERY concerned that unwanted critters will be transported island to island - mongoose, Coquis, Bufos, snakes...

It worries me especially for Kaua%26#39;i, which hasn%26#39;t yet fallen to the above.

sounds great but I will believe it when I see it, I wonder if they can really make it work, sounds expensive to run. What would really help is if they ran some family packages, big groups get real expsensive at airline prices.

My other concern is discounts for HI residents.

There%26#39;s supposed to be a low-price interisland airline starting up - Hawai%26#39;i Air, or something like that. In theory, that would force Hawaiian and Aloha to drop prices.

Would there then be overcapacity, resulting in Chapter 11%26#39;s or whatever US bankruptcy protection is called?

Price wars are great, but someone has to lose eventually.

A lot of local people would like to have ferry service. The idea of travelling between islands and being able to take your car with you is very attractive. However we%26#39;re not holding our breath for a startup date of 2007, service was supposed to begin in 2005.

    Closest Supermarket to Waikiki Beach

    Hi there

Could you please tell me which is the closest supermarket to Waikiki beach.

    Closest Supermarket to Waikiki Beach

The pantry on kuhio near prindess kaiulana is a pretty complete market, if you want bigger take a cab to Daihi (spelling probably incorrect).

    Closest Supermarket to Waikiki Beach

Foodland in Ala Moana shopping mall has pretty good selection and prices. Sign up for their makai card (it%26#39;s free) so that you get the sale prices.

Daiei (again the spelling may be off) is a nifty experience. They sell more than just food. We had a great time shopping there.

There%26#39;s a Foodland right at Kapahulu and H1, but the parking lot is usually a mess and it can be tough to get to because of the one ways and the way the roads intersect there. There%26#39;s also a Safeway on Beretania, which probably wouldn%26#39;t be too far out of the way if you%26#39;re coming from the airport. Personally, I used to live just outside of Waikiki and I was willing to make the trip to the Safeway and Costco in Hawaii Kai.

    Fairmont moderate suite?

Hello! My fiance and I are looking to spend out honeymoon in Maui in July and are thinking about booking at the Fairmont Kea Lani, but were wondering if anyone had stayed in the one bedroom moderate suite. I have tried doing a search, but I would love anyone%26#39;s opinon on the room. I love the idea of a suite, but wasn%26#39;t sure of their definition of ';moderate';.

We are also looking at the Westin and Sheraton if anyone has any advice. Greatly appreciated!

    Fairmont moderate suite?

My wife and i will be checking in to the Fairmont this saturday, i will put trip report on TA when we get back.

    Fairmont moderate suite?

Thanks! Have a great trip!!! Aloha!

Just got back. Stayed at the Westin for 5 days and the Fairmont for 4 days. Loved them both - the Westin is a smaller property and things can get crowded but is in a great location with lots to do.

The Fairmont is very spacious. The hotel was sold out when we were there but we did not feel the crwods at all. There was plenty of space at the pools and the beach and was easy to get chairs. I would recommend the Fairmont for your honeymoon as it is more relaxed.

As far as a ';moderate'; room, I would ask where it is located, what is the view and has it been renovated ? I have read bad reviews from people who got a non-renovated room.

    Hope this helps.

It does! Thanks--we decided to go ahead with the Kea Lani on the advice of our travel agent and can%26#39;t wait! Thanks so much!

  • Lots of questions;)

My dh and I just got back from our second trip to Maui. We loved it, but are looking into going to a different island next time. I don%26#39;t know much about Kauai, but I think this is where we would like to go. We would be going at the end of December. It would just be the two of us, and we would like to rent a condo. We would like to be where it is sunny. We enjoy snorkelling and swimming, but I did not spend much time in the ocean this last time because it was too rough for me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much,

    Rebecca

    Lots of questions;)

In December you probably want to be on the south shore, probably in the Po%26#39;ipu area. It should generally be sunnier there and the water calmer. There are lots of good condos there, many of which people here have personal experience with.

Get a copy of ';Ultimate Kaua%26#39;i Revealed'; to help in your planning.

    Lots of questions;)

I agree, Poipu would be a good choice for dec. If you want to compare some of features and locations of the condo%26#39;s there try suiteparadise.com. We stayed at the Poipu Kai resort and absolutely loved it. The beach is very calm in some places, and has waves out further. I can%26#39;t wait to go back. It is also right by an old town named Koloa which was fun to explore.

Thanks so much, will look into it!

    Rebecca

If you%26#39;re thinking of coming during the Christmas / New Year%26#39;s holidays, keep in mind that many places book up well in advance - up to a year. Poipu would be a good place to stay , although you could really stay just about anywhere on the island and drive to different beaches. Even though it%26#39;s winter, the north shore frequently has days that are beautiful as well.

Take a look at vrbo.com for condos and houses in all areas of Kauai.

from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay. (bus or tour)

    Hi,

I read few of the posts hear which said take the bus to hanauma bay from waikiki which is about $2 one way, and some said about tour which cost you about $15/pp. This is the first time we will be going oahu and want to go there for snorkeling.

We would really appreaciate if someone could tell us as to if it is faster to go by bus or the tour. If we go by bus we will have to rent the snorkeling gear from the bay itself ( is that costlier than $15??)

    Please help..

    thanks

from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay. (bus or tour)

I would guess the time will be about the same if you take the bus or the tour. With the tour, you%26#39;ll need to stop over other hotels to pick-up other tourists. With the bus, as long as you know the schedule, you can hop on it and away you go to Hanauma bay. We took the bus and it was easy and fun. As for snorkelling gears, why rent? You can buy them at many stores in Honolulu for the same price as you would rent. Enjoy!!!

from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay. (bus or tour)

I just recommended the Go Hawaii Card to someone else with a similar question in this forum. I recommend a tour if you%26#39;re a beginning snorkler and there is a good one with the Go Hawaii Card if you%26#39;re planning on staying in Oahu for a few days and are going to do stuff like the Wakikki Trolley, Diamond Head Hike, USS Arizona, and Circle Island Tour. The Hanauma Bay Snorkle Tour includes gear, water, and the park fees if that give you any idea what you%26#39;ll get out of it. Have a great time!

    Thanks for the replies..

we are there only for 3 days, so we might as well take the tour for hanauma bay for a day which is around $20 which i found onthis website..

    condos

One more question. Are there any good condo deals close to the Sheraton in June? If the savings are right we would consider staying elswhere even if our meeting is at the Sheraton

    condos

yes. I know Westin Ka%26#39;anapali deluxe villas (1700 sq.ft. beach front) available for rent if you are interested.

    condos

Outrigger Maui Eldorado is right next door to the Sheraton

I found the maui eldorado online. Looks like a good option. Would be interested in more info on the Westin as well please

I would recommend the Kaanapali Shores or the Mahana. They are both about a 5 minute drive north of the Sheraton. I personally love the Shores, they have all the amenties including washer and dryer, beach is okay and two nice pools. They also have an onsite restaurant, and rates are pretty good.

The Eldorado is probably your closest condo option being about a 5 minute walk across the golf course. The condos are right on the golf course if that is OK with you. They do have a nice private cabana with showers on the beach.

The Westin Kaanapali Villas are not really condos, but rather time-shares. It is probably a bit far to walk to the Sheraton from there, but you can drive or take a shuttle. I know there was still some construction going on with new tower recently so not sure when that is planned for completion.

    Pool Help

We are planning a trip to the islands in Feruary and are having difficulty finding a new resort. Looking for oceanside resort with great pools. Have been to Grand Hyatt in Kauai and Grand Wailea on Maui and loved the pools. Would prefer Big Island or other Kauai but open. Will be in Oahu at HHV for part of trip. Any help would be appreciated!

    Pool Help

Well, if you%26#39;re planning to revisit Kauai, you%26#39;re not going to find pools superior to the Hyatt%26#39;s! However, I personally will not return to Kauai without staying on the lovely north shore.

Arguably, the best resort pools on the Big Island are at the Hilton Waikoloa. We are going to the Big Island this summer to explore (staying multiple places) and finish up with three nights at the Grand Wailea to get our ';pool fix';.

    Pool Help

In February, the north shore would be a little risky just because of the weather. A lot of places don%26#39;t heat their pools either. If the pool doesn%26#39;t get much sun in the winter, it can be a little chilly!

The Marriott in Lihue has a very large, nice pool area with swim-up bar, but it%26#39;s nothing like the setup at the Hyatt.

    good intro scuba needed

preferably a walk in beach dive. Can you fly the day after?

    good intro scuba needed

Go to the Sheraton on Ka%26#39;anapali Beach-they%26#39;ll take you around Black Rock-good place.

You can fly after 24 hours, but since they won%26#39;t let you go down more than 30-40 feet on an intro, it should not be a problem. But why not do this earlier in your stay?

    good intro scuba needed

Ask for Rob Groh at the scuba shack in front of the Hyatt in Ka%26#39;anapali. I grew up with him. He%26#39;s a great guy, knows what he%26#39;s doing. We went to Haleakala, went diving at Black Rock and flew out that night. Don%26#39;t go below 30 feet but your instructor will answer any questions like that.

  • Princeville v. Hyatt v. Sheraton

I am still debating where to stay in Kauai for a September trip. My finalists are:

Hyatt: Pros: great location, beautiful grounds; Cons: Not a good beach for swimming (too rough)

Sheraton: Pro: Supposedly the best resort beach, calmest water for swimming of the 3 resort beaches and nicest as far as fewest rocks; Cons: not as nice or luxurious as the other 2 resorts

Princeville: Pros: Beautiful location, luxurious resort; Cons: not as great a beach as Poipu at the resort, more prone to rain

I would love any input anyone could offer as I try to make a decision

    Princeville v. Hyatt v. Sheraton

The beach at Princeville is spectacular with mountains and bali hai in the distance-I%26#39;ve seen both beaches and north shore beaches are the most stunning.

    Princeville v. Hyatt v. Sheraton

I agree with Enjoy, beaches up north are great. The Princeville beach is a decent enough resort beach. It is not as nice as the Sheraton beach, but we found it to be less crowded, and very swimable.

Princeville %26amp; Sheraton are both Starwood resorts. You can use the grounds at either, and even charge lunch/drinks back to your room from either. We toured the Sheraton and it seemed decent enough, but its clearly not in the same class as the Hyatt or Princeville.

The Hyatt is gorgeous from what we could see. Lots more people, lots more kids than at the Princeville. Princeville offers the best scenic setting.

Good luck, and don%26#39;t stress over the choice too much. You%26#39;ll have a great time wherever you end up.

Lots of kids at the Hyatt so that would be my biggest issue. The Princeville seemed (dare I say) more high class, so not us, although very nice.

Of the 3, I would personally choose the Sheraton but only in an oceanfront room in the wing away from the swimming pool. But thats just me!

As your previous poster said, don%26#39;t sweat it--you can%26#39;t make a bad choice. (Although I would definitely avoid the garden section of the Sheraton as it is across the street with the main part of the Sheraton between you and the ocean)

Let us know what you decide please.

I am enjoying the good info from you all... Would you put the Marriott Resort in the mix? How is the beach there as far as waves and being swimmable?

We found the Princeville to be very comfortable. Not a pretentious atmosphere. The staff was great all around, especially the pool staff.

People actually had a personality, they smiled, laughed, talked with guests. It was nice, things like that are not for everyone, but they added to our stay.

A good contrast to the robotic efficiency of, say the Four Seasons in Maui. Guests at the Princeville also seemed much more laid back. I don%26#39;t think I heard a cell phone conversation at the pool the whole week. I can%26#39;t say that about the Four Seasons.

Gneil, are you going for your honeymoon? I can%26#39;t help with the Marriot, we really didn%26#39;t check that out at all.

Not a honeymoon (we did Aruba for that) this year. It will be our 1 year anniversary.

Would you put the Marriott Resort in the mix?

    Aloha!

I LOVE the Marriott. Not as fancy at the Princeville, not as ';grand'; as the Hyatt, but a GREAT central location, PRETTY gounds, a HUGE pool, GOOD restaurants on-site and nice rooms. It holds a spell on me...I find its beauty and serenity to be just right for me.

    Bryan Brown

    BBrown9825@aol.com

I would definitely consider marriott. How is the beach there? calm? swimmable?

If you%26#39;re talking about the Marriott in Lihue on Kalapaki Beach, that%26#39;s a fine little beach for swimming and boogie boarding in September. You might even see some kite surfers.

  • Big Island or Kaua'i

Trying to decide on which island to visit in Feb. We will have 2 nights in Honolulu, 3 night is Maui and 2 nights in either the Big Island or Kaua%26#39;i. Just my husband and myself.

    Big Island or Kaua'i

I%26#39;d recommend staying the extra 2 nights in Maui. Otherwise, you%26#39;ll use up valuable time on interisland flights, and you%26#39;ll barely even be able to get the flavor of a 3rd island in 2 nights. There%26#39;s more than enough to keep you busy for 5 nights on Maui.

Do Kaua%26#39;i and BI on your next trip.

    Hawaii with a baby?

I am a single parent of a 1 yr old boy and was thinking of taking a vacation to Hawaii. (I%26#39;ve never been) Everyone thinks I am crazy because I won%26#39;t be able to do everything I could if I went alone and they say he wouldn%26#39;t have fun. The was I see it, he is young, he isn%26#39;t going to care if he is in Hawaii or Walmart =) Am I crazy? Are there things for us to do?

    Hawaii with a baby?

The way I see it, a single mom with a baby is just as entitiled to a little R%26amp;R as the rest of us. When my kids were little, we were visiting family there, which certainly made it easier, but I loved taking my little ones to the beach to play in the sand. On Oahu, Haunama Bay is a very protected beach area where there are no harsh waves- an easy place to bring a baby.

It%26#39;s true that you amy be limited in what you can do, but that%26#39;s true at home as well, isn%26#39;t it?

Maybe to make the journey a little more interesting for you, you could find an empathatic friend who wanted to come along??

Oh, do be sure to always lather baby in tons of sunscreen and have him wear a hat- the one thing you don%26#39;t want to have happen is to have a baby sick with sunburn!

    Hawaii with a baby?

Go!! My husband had a business trip to Hawaii 12 years ago and I was 5 months pregnant with a 14 month old!! I was not going to miss the trip or leave the baby behind.

The Time change was tough on me and the baby, but we had a great time. Take it easy and enjoy the ambience. I was alone much of the day and we took our time and wandered around and enjoyed the scenery. We are going back with the kids now in April. They are 13 and 11. We will be on the go more now, but not too much!

It is going to be difficult going anywhere on your own with a 1 year old. Should you give up travelling because of that - NO!!! (I%26#39;m assuming you are travelling alone).

Will this be the first time you have been away without support from friends or family with the baby?

If so, maybe somewhere closer to home in case things go pear shaped may be better.

Wow,, I say go! I bet he will love the Zoo and the Marine Park in Waikiki! He will for sure love the waters! Get a floatie, sunscreen and have at it. The only thing I can think of that you can%26#39;t do is go partying and maybe a hike would be tough...but everything else is great with a child no matter the age!

    Grocery Shopping from Ekahi

Is there easy access to grocery shopping from the Ekahi development (without a car), i.e. a small store nearby one can walk to without having to take a cab to Kihei for Safeway?

    Grocery Shopping from Ekahi

You are closer to the Shops at Wailea, which is walking distance from Wailea Ekahi. They have a great Whalers General Store there with a deli and bakery goods. Also, there is an ABC Store located there. They have fruit bowls and all kinds of food stuff in the back of the store.

    month on maui

We%26#39;re looking for a place to stay on Maui for a month. We have to be on a budject so we can stay that long. Any hope for us?

    month on maui

Be a big help if you define ';budget';...as in how much per night or for the month for rent.

    month on maui

As Bill said, it would help if you defined budget however the place we are staying is about as budget as it will get on Maui (I think). We are at Hale Aina, lookup koolauvacations.com

Will be back on Jan 26th so can update you then on the accomodations but another TripADvisor poster did recommend it...

Try www.vrbo.com or other rent-from-owner websites. You can often negotiate great extended stay rates. We did this last November and paid less than the owner%26#39;s listed rate which was already much less than the best internet rate I could find going through the condo complex%26#39;s management company. We%26#39;ve already made plans to do the same this coming Fall.

One word of advice, make your plans early since finding a month-long block of time may be difficult at popular locations especially during peak times of the year.

We were on a strict budget, too, since we put more importance on a longer stay rather than a luxury stay. When you stay longer you can almost pretend that you live there! We loved our visit and found that there are many things to do and see on Maui that are free or quite inexpensive.

    Yes, there is hope!

';Budget'; as in $3,000 for the mo. for a place to stay, not counting food and fun.

gottotravel what did you pay for month on maui? Where did you stay?

    Aloha Diva!

$3000 for a month is definitely do-able. We are paying just under $100/night (including taxes) for a studio condo in Napili. We chose it for its nice beach and quiet, lush location. The winter months can be more windy and rainy from what I understand, however we found it to be very nice weather when we were there in November.

If you can%26#39;t find something available in Napili (or you%26#39;d prefer a different location), you can also look just south in the area between Kaanapali and Napili (Honokowai, Kahana for example). The weather gets better apparently as you move south and there are many oceanfront condo complexes, though not all are on a sandy beach.

Kihei is another option for good value. Condos there often have good proximity to nice beaches and lots of services. I would check TripAdvisor%26#39;s reviews for any complex you are considering. Another great resource is Maui Revealed. You can go onto their website (www.wizardpub.com) even if you don%26#39;t own the book to see arial pictures of the resorts so you know exactly what it looks like and where it is located in relation to the ocean, if that is important for you.

I%26#39;m a fan of Napili Bay obviously! Other people I know have stayed in the other areas I%26#39;ve mentioned and said they loved them, too. Just decide what features or location are most important to you to help narrow down the choice. Hope that%26#39;s a help.

  • Storage of valuables with a Jeep Wrangler

Will be spending 10 days in Kihei in June and am renting a Jeep Wrangler for the 10 days. We will be spending a lot of time exploring the island and beaches while we are there. Since we will have a Jeep with no lockable trunk, what have people done in the past with valuables while on the beach or snorkeling. Obviously we won’t be brining anything other then the necessities, ID, Credit card or cash. Also, what about a camera and stuff like that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Storage of valuables with a Jeep Wrangler

Yeah - um - don%26#39;t. - store valuables that is. Although all cars are vulnerable, jeeps are of course, easy prey. We also had a jeep and on a hike left a cooler, our sunglasses, a shirt and our tripod in the car. When we returned everything except the tripod was gone. One pair of sunglasses was even locked in the center console. We were SOOOO lucky we didn%26#39;t have our rental snorkel equipment with us. From then on we took everything everywhere.

Strangly, I always felt safer on the beach. We will leave our stuff in a pile - towels and bookbag. However, we purcahse a dry bag (waterproof bag) to put our camera, keys, wallet, etc. in to take with us in the water snorkeling. Make sure you get a good one though and roll it correctly or it will leak. You may want to test it first.

The moral of the story is - don%26#39;t leave anything in your car you can%26#39;t replace. A cheap styrofone cooler is great because if it%26#39;s stolen, it%26#39;s only $5 to replace.

Don%26#39;t get too paranoid about it, but do be careful.

Storage of valuables with a Jeep Wrangler

Bottom line - don%26#39;t leave anything you%26#39;d cry over if you lost it. We had a jeep and had a cooler, a long-sleeved sweetshirt, two pairs of sunglasses, and a little paper bag with a musubi in it stolen at a hiking trail start. Strangely, they didn%26#39;t take the tripod. But, it happens. One pair of sunglasses was even locked in the center console. We were SOOO lucky not to have our rental snorkel stuff in the car. After that we took everything everywhere.

I feel slightly safer on the beach for some reason. Enough to leave towels and our backpack of sunscreen. If we are just swimming and playing, we keep an eye on it. But, we are snorkelers, so we bought a dry bag to put our camera, keys, wallet, etc in so we can take it in the water. Make sure you get a good one (check canoe supplies or google dry bags - amke sure it is okay for cameras), and close it properly or it will leak. Test it first BEFORE you stick you camera in it. It doesn%26#39;t hurt to also put your camera and walet in plastic bags just in case.

A cheap styrofome cooler is great because if it%26#39;s stolen it%26#39;s only $5 to replace. Plan accordenly. If you know you are just driving around and not swimming, leave the snorkel set at home. Thieft happens, but if you take precautions, it won%26#39;t ruin your vacation.

Storage of valuables with a Jeep Wrangler

as far as a camera...if you%26#39;re taking pics in/around the water (snorkeling or waterfalls) bring one of those disposable waterproof ones for the day and leave the good camera back at your hotel room.

  • Kihei Restaurant Reviews

Just returned from 10 days in Kihei, thought I would post on some of the places we ate at.

Maui Tacos - good cheap Mexican food - we got there at 11:30 when it opened and there was already a lineup. Recommend take-out as it%26#39;s a tiny place and gets crowded quickly.

Maui Thai - good food, good value - will spice it to your liking. We got take-out and loved it. Dinner for two ($30) also provided enough for lunch the next day.

Tommy Bahamas (Shops at Wailea) - We asked to sit on the patio and were told it was ';full';. Sat at the bar and watched the half-empty patio for the entire time we were there for lunch. Saw other people seated out there after us. Many empty tables remained empty. Tried the recommended Coconut Shrimp - was delicious but for $19 for six shrimp, and obvious other reasons, would not go back nor recommend it.

Cheeseburger (Shops at Wailea) - good value, good burgers, good service - loud family atmosphere.

Bada Bing! - Excellent selection of Italian food (including wonderful, fresh thin-crust pizzas) very friendly staff, reasonable prices and GREAT $2 Mai Tais at Happy Hour.

Kihei Caffe - get there early as this place is BUSY. Great food at reasonable prices. Eggs Benny or Breakfast Burrito = $7.95 each

Marco%26#39;s - lovely place, excellent Italian food, very good service, however we felt overpriced ($16.95) for pasta.

Roy%26#39;s (Kihei) (by Safeway) - loud family atmosphere which we didn%26#39;t expect. Good service, pricey but good if you like unusual seafood dishes. Entrees were $25-$30. We had one appy and left because we couldn%26#39;t find anything that appealed. Just our opinion.

Coldstone Creamery (by Safeway) - a must-try if you love ice cream - fantastic is putting it mildly. Try the dipped waffle cones. Tip the girls and they will sing for you!

Sarento%26#39;s on the Beach - be sure and request a beach-side table before sunset - we didn%26#39;t and sat in a booth, however still had a nice view of the sunset. Excellent service, delicious food - VERY pricey but a good place for a ';splurge';. Dinner for two with a (reasonable) bottle of wine and tip = $175

Thank you for posting---we are heading back in a few weeks and will add your list to our list. So little time so much food!!

    Kihei Restaurant Reviews

Thank you so much for posting that. We will be in Kihei in 14 days (but who%26#39;s counting.) We have tried some of the places like Kihei Cafe and Badda Bing and agree with you on your review. Thanks for letting me know about Maui Thai. We tried Sala Thai last time, but will visit there instead. We%26#39;re staying at the Mana Kai, which shares the beach and sunset with Sarento%26#39;s, so will opt to bring home food and sit on our Lanai instead.

Again, thank you for the post.

By the way, I forgot to mention that we spoke to a gentleman at the pool one day who had just had lunch at Mama%26#39;s Fish House.

Although we did not go there ourselves, he reported to us that the cheapest glass of wine was $16 and the Caesar salad was $36.

BTW, another for the list is Alexander%26#39;s. Great, basic fish plate lunch. Cheap.

Also, Joe%26#39;s - up by the tennis club in Wailea. A little pricy but very good. Nice atmosphere. Same folks as have Hailemaile General Store.

2nd vote for Alexander%26#39;s--good food, good price. Also Da Kitchen--lau lau pork and mostly everything else!

How is Mulligan%26#39;s in Wailea? I have reservations for Feb for Wailea nights? The menu looked okay.

    tours to do

    Hi all,

can you please give me a few ideas on what tours we should do around Lahaina. I%26#39;m going with 3 friends that range in age from 27-32 thanks

    tours to do

We would suggest something on the water, a whale watch if you are there the right time, or a snorkle trip to Molikini or Lanai. If you are there at the whale time you can do both at once. Would you be renting a car? Would recommend it and then the road to Hana and the Iao Valley. and the beaches all over. A trip upcountry and maybe sunrise at Haleakala. Ther%26#39;s tons to do.

    rainy weather

Okay, I%26#39;m nervous. We leave this weekend and the weather predicts rain showers all week. We are staying in the Wailea area. What are my chances we have rain every day? Any activity ideas on a rainy Maui day?

    rainy weather

I%26#39;M going to go out on a limb here and guess that you%26#39;ve been looking at weather.com - if that%26#39;s the case, stop it right now!

Weather.com is notoriously bad for making the weather look terrible for large areas of Hawaii when the predicted rain is likely to be either very scattered or very brief. That%26#39;s because they group large areas together under one forecast, and Hawaii is a land of many, many microclimates.

This is where you should get your Hawaiian weather forecasts:

    www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/content.php?pid=52

As you can see the chance of rain in your area ranges from zero to 20% all week long. That%26#39;s a 20% chance that SOME rainfall will fall at SOME time in that area during the time in question - not that there is a 20% chance of it raining ALL day, just a 20% chance of raindrops falling at some time.

This is not uncommon, and although no one can promise anything, it%26#39;s actually a pretty decent forecast, because it means that there is between 100% and 80% that you will get NO rain whatsoever (not matter how brief or how light) during the day or night in question.

Pretty darned good odds I%26#39;d say. People always get sooooooo nervous when the see showers forecasted. The fact is, yeah it may rain on you, and it%26#39;s aways possible you could be drenched, but the likelihood is the weather will be pretty darned nice most of the time, and that any rain you get will be infrequent, brief, and even somewhat welcome. Often it rains in Upcountry and from the beach areas where%26#39; you%26#39;ll be you can look upslope and see the rain maybe a mile or 2 away, but it just hangs around up there and the beach areas remain dry.

Don%26#39;t worry about it. Go and have a GOOD time.

You really don%26#39;t want to go to Maui and miss seeing the beautiful rainbows. Enjoy.

Thanks for your info. You are right, I was looking at weather.com. Rain or not, I%26#39;ll be in paradise!

here in Washington State you can tell its summer because the rain is warm. Warm rain in Paradice is fine with me. I to have been looking at the weather. I know on Maui 95%of the rain is in the AM and clears to a wonderful day.

From most popular places on Maui you can drive 20 or 30 minutes and get out of the rain. It%26#39;s rarely raining everywhere at once.

    enjoy!
