Getting from airport to Waikiki hotels

A few people have mentioned the hassle of dealing with the shuttle from the Honolulu airport to the Waikiki hotels. If we don%26#39;t opt for the cheaper shuttle, should we reserve another service ahead of time or just get a cab once we arrive? Is there much of a difference in price between the van services (not limos) and cabs? We get into Honolulu at 3:30 p.m. HST, so I want to make the most of the rest of the day we have there -- thanks!

Getting from airport to Waikiki hotels

Hi, soxgal8.

I%26#39;m a convert to taking cabs. I took shuttles for over twenty years. Then, several years ago, I was tired and took a cab. It was only about 23.00 (in non-rush hour).

With two of us, it was really cost effective, compared with the double tickets on the shuttle.

The older I get, the more I opt for convenience and lack of hassle.

Last time (Oct 2005), I even pre-arranged for a pickup, based on reviews in tripadvisor...ABC Limo...Melvin was really great...personally met our flight in baggage claim area, and helped with our luggage...flat rate, regardless of traffic...but of course it%26#39;s more than a cab.

One caution...if you take a cab, you will be on meter, and with rush hour, that can run up the tab considerably. If you%26#39;re arriving on a weekday, keep this in mind.

As for catching a cab at the airport, it%26#39;s easy. There are always lots of cabs lined up to pickup. They have an cab area across from the baggage claim where airport authorities ask your destination, and direct you to an appropriate cab...they do this to make sure only officially-approved cabs are picking up, and that people are accommodated in an orderly way, first come, first served. Some cabs charge a nominal fee extra for each bag, and some cabs charge extra if all your luggage won%26#39;t fit in the trunk. Have a wonderful visit!

Rothea,

This is great info -- thanks! I thought about the $$$ difference between taking a cab and the double shuttle tickets and figured it%26#39;s probably worth the few extra dollars to get where we want to go right away.

PS. What time does rush hour usually start in Honolulu? I%26#39;m used to DC rush hour, which can be well underway by 4 p.m...

If you are traveling to Honolulu, taxis are the best way to go. The fare to the center of Waikiki is about $30.00. Make sure your drive stays off the freeway, traffic is heavy at all hours of the day. Their are services that offer flat rates from the airport to waikiki by appointment. Go on-line or try Frommers guide books, They have some really good recommendations.

I am going to Hawaii also from Dulles Airport.

When are you planning to go?

I already booked rental car since I want to drive to my hotel and drive around the Hawaii everyday.

Maybe I should become a taxi service while I am there.

I think renting car beats taxi or shuttle but if you have to use public transportation, I think taxi is worth it.

soxgal and kaesan...I didn%26#39;t realize that you guys were neighbors of mine (I%26#39;m a little south of Waldorf). I usually fly from Dulles, too. Anyway, rush hour starts early in Oahu... Most people try to go in early and get off early, so they can enjoy the outdoor life in that beautiful place. The traffic is REALLY bad when it%26#39;s bad.

Last October, we arrived about three-thirty and by the time we got our luggage and Melvin brought the car around to pick us up, rush hour was well underway. It seems to me nowdays that almost any time of day is bad taffic in Oahu...Taxibob is right on. But going-home rush hour can be especially troublesome, coming from the direction of the airport.

Oh, and just for frame of reference, in my research, flat rate pre-arranged airport pickup is about twice as much as an airport cab would be, if the cab doesn%26#39;t get stuck in traffic. It%26#39;s all in what you%26#39;re looking for. After a long day of travel, some people want to relax upon arrival. Airport pickup is wonderful for that. Nothing like a smiling face, greeting you by name and helping with your baggage...then bringing around a car just for you. If you%26#39;ve never been there before, it can alleviate some of the anxiety.

Whatever you choose, just remember you will be arriving in HAWAII..and you will be so enchanted when you get that first breath of air outside the plane...the tropical feel, the exotic scenery, the breeze on your face... it%26#39;s so wonderful. The logistics will take a back seat to your elation at being there. It%26#39;s a very user-friendly airport, with clearly marked areas for ground transport of all kinds, and rental car shuttles. You%26#39;ll have such a great time.

AND, even if you decide to take the shuttle to Waikiki, you can use the other hotel stops that may be before yours to help familiarize yourself with the layout of the Waikiki area... so it%26#39;s all good.

We are arriving at night from the east coast- VA also!!

I was thinking of arranging a limo service for my family of four. We are arriving around 7:30pm Hawaii time which will be the middle of the night for us after flying coach for a zillion hours.

Is it worth the extra over a taxi? They will also provide leis and I think my daughters would be very excited about that.

We are going to Honolulu at the end of the month. I have reserved us a rental car, but after reading about how handy the bus service is, and how most places will pick you up for activities I am reconsidering the car. Any advice?

I%26#39;d compare the cost of a cab to a limo. For me it was more cost effective to take a limo. Not a lot more and it sure was nice...
