Short hikes with kids

Heading for our first family trip to the BI in June.

I sure have learned a bunch from the posts here, thanks!

I would like to go on some easy scenic 1-2 mile hikes with my kids, ages 10%26amp;12.

Any suggestions?

Short hikes with kids

try Koloko national park in Kona,: the petroglyph trail n Waikoloa : Volcanoes national park, : the rest of the island is private and youu need a tour company to trespass.

Short hikes with kids

Try Lapakahi State Park in North Kohala. It stretches from the Highway down to the ocean.

About 300 acres, it is the site of a 600 year old Native Hawaiian fishing village. Some has been restored and the ruins of much of the village structures and walls are still evident.

There are signs explaining the village and lifestyle, there is sometimes a ranger (or docent) on site to answer questions, and they usually have some Hawaiian games/activities laid out to try.

Its a short hike of a mile or two to go through the village to the ocean (and there is pretty good snorkeling there) and back up to the parking lot.

The hike around the Akaka Falls lookout, through a rainforest that you would swear is a landscaped garden, is another short favorite.

Whereever you end of going...take water.

Aloha warf, the zoo in Hilo kids love it.

Helicopter Tours

I need comments on the helicopter tours of the island. (Kauai) I do not like roller coasters or ferris wheels so I am a little tentative about the tour. My husband does not want to go. I have heard that they are wonderful and they shouldn%26#39;t be missed.

Are the flights ';rough and up and down'; like a roller coaster? Anybody get motion sickness?

Please email your experiences....

Helicopter Tours

Very gentle ride. I WILL NOT ride roller coasters but did not find our Maui helicopter ride to be at all frightening. The crash statistics are a little frightening however. Not sure I%26#39;d do it again because of this BUT am glad I did it once.

weather

I am going to visit oahu Febuary 24th. What is the weather like and what kind of clothes should I pack? What is the best place to snorkle/scuba ( not certified). Where is the best scenic horse back riding. Any boat tours recommended?

Thanks, Raejean

We saw the same kind of forcasts for our visit to the BI last month. And the only rain was one evening storm one night. Which was actually a good thing, because it washed away all the vog and the next couple days were fresh and clear.

Oops, ignore the above answer, I meant to put that in another post.

weather next week??

Hi - we%26#39;ll be in waikoloa next week and I just checked the weather and every day has rain!!

weather next week??

it says that every week.....cause%26#39; it rains somewhere on the Island somewhere a tad every day....it has not rained here for a month... well one night after mid-night it did rain 0.01 of an inch.

Waikoloa has more rain and wind than nearby Waikoloa Beach... which is 8 miles and 1000 feet away. They are two different places...... which are you in ?

weather next week??

Thanks for the reply - we%26#39;ll be staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

  • Bragain accommodation in good location

    Hey all,

I%26#39;m hoping a few kind locals might be able to recommend some nice accommodation for a solo female traveller - all the rates appear to assume dual occupancy, and I can%26#39;t afford to be paying double just because I am travelling alone. I usually like 4* places, and can pay $150 or so per night in early March.

    Any ideas, good people?

    Thx,

    Pauly

    Bragain accommodation in good location

    Pauly...

If you are booking your hotel room separately, American hotel rates are invariably priced on ';per night per room';, not a ';per person per night'; basis. When you look at the rates posted on the popular booking sites (Expedia, Orbitz, etc.) that is the entire price for the room for that night, not per person.

The reason it states ';assuming double occupancy';, is that they will generally charge extra if there are more than two people in the room.

So, if a website quotes $150 per night, that it what you will pay for either single or double occupancy. And, if you are willing to spend that kind of money, you will find a multitude of interior (off-water) Waikiki hotels from which to select. Check out the Ohana properties and those on Kuhio Avenue.

Now, things may be different if you are booking a tour or package where there will likely be an extra charge for single occupancy....

    North Shore in February

I know you can%26#39;t predict the weather, but generally what kind of weather can we expect on the North Shore the last two weeks of February?

    Thanks.

    North Shore in February

The weather on the north shore that time of year is going to be rainy. We were there that same time last year and it was raining up there (haena) about 50-70% of the time. The hardest rain was overnight. On the persistently rainy days we would go to the south shore for lots more sunshine! I do not recommend hiking Napali if raining or too wet at all. Kauai rain feels great though!

    North Shore in February

    SunNut-

My husband and I have stayed on the North Shore of Kauai the last three years in mid-February and the weather was really nice-mostly sunny. There may have been a day or two when it rained for 30 minutes or so, but then the skies cleared up. However, I have heard that it rains alot on the north shore during winter so maybe we just got lucky?

KC72-I just have a hunch, but do you know blarneymo?? We love your comments and we hope to see you in Kuaui in February!

garden isle ranch or 17 palms

    Hi All,

I%26#39;m considering staying at one of these properties. Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

garden isle ranch or 17 palms

Both look really nice in the pix. I%26#39;d want to know exactly where 17 Palms is in relation to Kuhio Highway; I can%26#39;t place it, and I%26#39;d be a little concerned about noise. I do like being located east side, though.

    Garden Isle Ranch looks gorgeous.

garden isle ranch or 17 palms

gentle bump...anyone stayed at either of these properties?

    fixed wing question for hawaiidan

Aloha, what is the name of the outfit for the fixed wing tour that you recommend? Is it better for us to book online before arriving? We%26#39;re staying at Hapuna end of Feb. Where would we depart from on this tour? My hubby looking at blue hawaii helo also but I%26#39;ve been reading threads that we%26#39;ll see more on fixed wing aircraft. We are a group of 4 adults. p.s. We%26#39;d love to cut your grass instead of shovel our snow.

    fixed wing question for hawaiidan

The outfit that I have taken is Big Island Air....and they dont have a web site.. bt are at the south end of the Kona Airport and flys from there..... it costs about $240 for a 2 hour tour and covers the entire island...it sees 40% more island than any helo tour..... and has better views too.. they have custom 3x3 ft windows

I have taken Blue Hawaiian too. They are excellent too..... but because the helos cost more to operate you will pay about $360 for a 2 hour tour that totlay misses the Kohala Mountains as I recall... only the Hamakua waterfalls.... (1/6th the size of kohala mt)

For safety, I as former pilot would always pick a fix wing single engine as the safest going..... ( A company on maui, just lost one of their brand new ';eco stars'; when the engine up and quit on a tour 3 days ago.)

So in the past 60 days there have been 3 helo incidents ; 2 with fatalities.....no fx wings have eaten the ';concrete buritto'; in years.

What is this '; snow'; you spoke of....

    fixed wing question for hawaiidan

    Mahalo HawaiiDan you%26#39;re a lifesaver!

lest you think I am overly cautious.... anothter Helo on Hawaii went down today at the volcano. (1-10-06) Gimme a fix wing.

    thats 4 .......

I got to this age by being cautious and suspect.....there are old pilots and bold pilots....there are no old and bold pilots.

I maybe dumb... but not stupid

That%26#39;s awful news. Who was the tour operator?

Several......of the big name operators. it iis not their fault it is a function of reality......

Is the cost $240 per person for the fixed wing?

last time checked..... it was 240.

I know that your hotel, their concierges can often times get you better deals.....

But these are the top folks in my opinion....

    Hana

The road to Hana was WELL worth it. We used the Maui Revealed Book and it was the best 15 bucks we could have spent. There was one waterfall location in particular, that was especially beautiful after a 20 minute hike over boulders. It may have been the most beautiful waterfall I saw on the road to Hana. Like I said, it takes a little work to get to it, but it is well worth it. The name of the falls were Punalau Falls. It is fairly early in the drive.

    Hana

please disregard...I was trying to reply to a post

    Hana

That is one of our favorite falls as well. Glad to hear you had a good time. Also I agree about the Maui Revealed Book, simply the best guide a person could ask for!!!

Need info on Senior Skins Game (again)

    Ok, here%26#39;s the deal......

were going to maui with some friends, we already got skin game tickets, now our friends are telling me that the town of Wailea is not on the maui island but on a different island??????

If I%26#39;m wrong....My bad, but I thought Wailea

IS on maui....also trying to find the web site to get the information again.

    Thanks for your help...

Seaside Bar and Grill is a very good place to eat breakfast at while in Waikiki area. It is located on Kuhio and Seaside Ave.

    Good food and great prices!!

    Seaside Grill

Thanks for the recommendation, adding to my list for our trip. Also saw your review on Yahoo!

    Kameole Beach Parks

We have stayed in Kihei a number of times and I have to admit we have never been to the Kam parks. We always seem to end up at Ulua, Makena Surf, Maui Prince, Big Beach, etc.... We also always take one day for Hana and another to head up to Lahaina and Kanapali.

Snorkeling is big for us, so are we making a big mistake by passing by the Kam parks?

    Kameole Beach Parks

    Absolutely.

The northerly headland of Kamaole III park offers a good to excellent near-shore snorkeling opportunity.

It is very similar to the formation at Ulua Beach Park in Wailea..easy to egress from a gentle beach in an improved park, swimming over a sandy bottom alongside a rock/reef wall, with a relativey shallow reef formation extending from the headland into deeper water.

It is best early in the AM as the sun comes over Haleakala, with maximum visibility, low turbidity and generally calm conditions. Typically in the PM the winds, waves and sand kick up.

Normally the fish are bountiful, but this reef does seem to have some seasonality in the species and count from time to time.

The inexperienced should be wary of swimming over the shallow reef portion during even moderate surf conditions. Its real easy to get banged around between the outcroppings by the surge, which is not good for a body or the coral.

2 for 1 golf at Hapuna

Hilo Hattie%26#39;s give 2 for 1 golf at Hapuna if you purchase items in their store. Has anyone used this or seen it? Is there a catch?

2 for 1 golf at Hapuna

this is a old and established firm......if they offer this then it is good.......

2 for 1 golf at Hapuna

Aloha Na, have done, as a golfer loved it.

Mahalo can%26#39;t wait to try my swing in the Hawaiian breeze.

    Itinerary suggestions

I will be flying into Honolulu for a week. Since I have already been to Oahu and Maui, I would like to do the following:

    Day 1-3: Big Island

    Day 4-6: Kauai

Day 7: Honolulu (night before flight home)

Is this too rushed? Would we be better off just spending the time at one island? Thanks.

    Itinerary suggestions

Pick one island. You%26#39;re going to spend to much time traveling in between with the schedule you show. 2 nights is nowhere near enough time on any one island.

    I vote for Kaua%26#39;i.

Not looking for the ';best gourmet'; type food, but a real Maui experience.

Oops, sorry,,this other poster and I posted at the same time

    Things to do

I would like to know what activities there are in Kauai. We like to explore, but are not ';hikers';. We plan to stay 10 days. We are not much into tours, but would probably like to take some sort of boat tour at the beginning of our trip. Thanks in advance.

    Rebecca

    Things to do

The choice to do a boat trip or not would depend somewhat on the time of year. During the winter months, the north shore can be very rough. Sometimes the boats can make it out and sometimes they cancel. It usually is considered one of the must-do things for Kauai.

Even though you don%26#39;t ';hike'; you may still find some of the easier trails at Waimea Canyon and the Sleeping Giant interesting and beautiful.

Consider a helicopter tour with either Interisland, Air Kauai, Jack Harter, or Will Squyers.

Shopping and visiting art galleries in Poipu, in Kapaa at the Coconut Marketplace, the north shore in Hanalei and Kilauea, and on the west side in Hanapepe can be fun.

Hang out on the beach and relax, go snorkeling, scuba diving or take surfing lessons. Walk along the path in the areas where it%26#39;s completed between Lihue and Kapaa.

Go to a Luau at Smith%26#39;s.

Visit the Botanical Gardens in Poipu or on the north shore.

Go to the craft fair that%26#39;s in Kapaa every weekend and the farmer%26#39;s markets that are in different locations daily.

Check out all the restaurants you can and have shave ice every day!!

Lots to do every day, and there may be special events going on when you come to visit - check the local calendar.

    Things to do

Aloha Kwills,May I ask what beaches you recommend? We will be visiting from the Pride of America in a few weeks and have never been to Kaui. We are looking for a few must sees and a lovely beach.Thank you

Kipsmom, how much time will you have ashore? Will you have a car? Do you want to swim? Snorkel? Do you need shade on the beach? I need to know how far from the ship you dare travel without fear of missing it on your return.

    Hi kipsmom,

Like pzp says, I would be a little concerned about how much time you have before you have to be back on board the ship. There are some stunning beaches, but they may take more time to reach than you will have.

Some of my favorites are Poipu beach and Lydgate for snorkeling and swimming with the kids, Salt Pond, Polihale, Lumahai, Kealia, Anini, Haena/Tunnels, and Mahaulepu.

Poipu and Kalapaki beach would be close and very easy for you to get to.

EEK! I think I made a mistake here. For some reason I read boat tour and was thinking cruise boat. So, OK, favorite beaches:

ALL OF THEM. Seriously... I love Anini and Ke%26#39;e. Somehow we always end up hanging out at one or the other. Shade, facilities and can be decent snorkeling. Plus... Anini has THE TACO TRUCK! %26lt;VBG%26gt; There%26#39;s a nice little hike up above Ke%26#39;e - not the Kalalau - but you can get some great views. I%26#39;ve done it barefoot, which should tell you something about the difficulty level.

Moloa%26#39;a Bay is gorgeous but parking is really difficult. Worth trying, though, even just to see it. Po%26#39;ipu is nice but well-touristed. I%26#39;d rather go to Lawai, assuming it%26#39;s not a super-high tide and there%26#39;s actually beach there. Good snorkeling, though, the occasional turtle or monk seal, and you can sit on the Beach House restaurant lawn for the sunset. Sometimes we spend the afternoon beaching, then dress in the lua across the street and have dinner at Beach House (on reservations made MUCH earlier, of course.)

Lumahai is gorgeous when the ocean is calm if you%26#39;re not averse to a short hike down and back up. STAY OFF THE ROCKS!!! There%26#39;s a small pocket of water that%26#39;s somewhat protected, and I%26#39;ve been in the water there, but only on a very calm day. The beach will be pretty much deserted.

There%26#39;s a nice walking path along the bay in Waipouli in front of some of the resorts makai of Coconut Marketplace.

I%26#39;d recommend getting a copy of Ultimate Kaua%26#39;i Revealed for info.

Thank you both so much for your response. We are on a cruise ship that docks in Nawiliwili at 10 am and doesnt pull out till 6pm the next day.We have been to Maui a few years ago but not this lovely eden. Our son is 9 and a great swimmer.Had I been familiar with this fabuous site before ,I may not have booked this cruise as the reviews are making me very nervous. But,whatever the ship is about, how can it detract from stepping foot in paradise and we are going to have a wonderous time and be grateful to pay a visit. Thanks for any suggestions/and can you suggest a wonderful beach bar/rest.(I am traveling with my Irish relatives-cocktails are a must) :)Blessings, Annie

Duke%26#39;s is right down the street from the ship dock. They have both a restaurant and separate bar. Good food, too, and one of the better salad bars around.

With a 9 year-old, you really have to check out Lydgate park / Kamalani playground. It%26#39;s maybe 15 minutes from the dock and your son will love it.

As far as bars go, Maui would be better, but there are some places on Kauai that should work. Check out Duke%26#39;s at the Marriott in Lihue for appetizers/dinner/drinks, the Lizard Lounge in Kapaa, The Shack in Kapaa, and Tahiti Nui in Hanalei.

    Have fun!!

You could easily make it to Po%26#39;ipu by car with enough time for a little beach-n-swimming. There%26#39;s a nice, very protected shallow area for keiki.

    Excellent,,my thanks to you both

  • How far is it from the ferry to the airport in Molokai?

We are taking the ferry over from Maui to Molokai for a day trip. The car rental agency (Dollar) is at MKK. I have called them a couple of times for info but can%26#39;t get through.

Does anyone know how far the ferry is from the car rental at the airport? Does Dollar pick up and drop off like Enterprise does? Or do we need a taxi?

    Thanks for any info.

How far is it from the ferry to the airport in Molokai?

The airpot is about 8 miles from the ferry. I think there is a shuttle to the rental car places.

    Sportfishing

Has anyone done any sportfishing while on Oahu? We have a trip booked with Chupu charters. We%26#39;ll have 4 teenage boys with us and they are looking forward to it although none of us have ever done this type of fishing.

    Things to do near Paia

My husband and I will be going to Maui for the first time this June and are staying at the Inn at Mama%26#39;s Fish House. We are a bit concerned that we will not have much to do in the evening after dinner without driving 30+ minutes. Any suggestions? I have looked online, but I know that area is much quieter and less ';touristy'; than Kannnapali and some other areas.

Also, what time should we depart for the Road to Hana? We were thinking of doing it in 2 days including the back end of the trip. Is this a good idea? I already have Maui Revealed. That should be like a bible for anyone going to Maui! Just looking at the pictures, I can%26#39;t wait!!

    Things to do near Paia

    Hi Christina,

We stayed 15 minutes from Paia. What types of things are you looking to do at night? As far as shows, etc...your options are slim to none. There are bars/restaurants that have late night crowds. Do you eat early dinners? We generally would explore all day and have a relaxing dinner later on...7-8ish, and end our night that way.

Its a great area with a lot of culture. Makawao is a good day trip too, but they close up shop earlier there.

How many nights will you be in Maui? We split our trip between Wailea and Paia, 4 nights each. I usually prefer settling in at one spot, but this was great because we were able to get in the Luau, Warran %26amp; Annabelle%26#39;s, etc. while in Wailea, and then just enjoy our time together in Paia.

    Things to do near Paia

All I know about Paia is that I had the BEST pancake at Charley%26#39;s. They served it with warm coconut syrup! Yummy! I had a pancake with coconut syrup at the very posh Grand Wailea, but it didn%26#39;t even compare to Charley%26#39;s!!!

We will probably eat later, around 8 or so. I was just wondering about bars/places to go in the evening. Not anything fancy like a show or club.

Charley%26#39;s in Pa`ia has live entertainment most nights. Another place in Pa`ia is Jacques. They usually have salsa on Mondays with Dr. nat and El Rio Ritmo. They also have DJ on Fridays, jazz durign the week. Sometimes you can even catch Willie Nelson, or at least his sons%26#39; band there. Up in Makawao is Casanova, with music every night and Stopwatch Sports Bar, music on Fr-S. They have live music as well. Used to be another bar in Pa`ia, most recently called the Sandbar, and there might be again by June. Not too far is Cafe Marc Aurel in Wailuku, with eclectic entertainment some early evenings. In Kahului the Ale House. Pick up a copy of MauiTime Weekly when you get here and see what is happening each week.

Thank you so much! Your reply was most helpful. I will definately pick up a magazine when we get there. I can%26#39;t wait!!

Pretty quiet upcountry.... when we stayed in Haiku last September we were on the early bird schedule.

10 minutes up the street is Makawao. Casanova is a nice place that serves dinner later, and offers some entertainment once in a while. Check this out...

    http://www.mauimapp.com/entertainment/upc.htm

As for Hana, I%26#39;d leave as early as possible to beat the crowds that will clog all the cool spots and coild prevent you from stopping to enjoy (read about the ';lemming factor'; in Maui Revealed). Can%26#39;t help you on the 2 day idea; we did it in one, preferring not to pack and move. Also I highly recommend continuing clockwise - it%26#39;s a long and bumpy, but it was also incredibly different and gorgeous when we did it.

    Enjoy!

After we saw Lahaina, did the Road to Hana, climbed Haleakala, and every other tourist attraction you could think of ... we always ended up back in Paia.

We stayed in Sprecklesville about ten minutes away.

After all, what does one go to Hawaii for but to relax. Relax you will in Paia. True, it%26#39;s not known for it%26#39;s shows and nightlife. But who cares? If you%26#39;re staying next door to Mama%26#39;s Fish House, you%26#39;ve got one of the best restaurants on the planet right next to you.

Seriously, plan two or three nights out on the island in search of entertainment. But don%26#39;t ruin the trip by not allowing yourself some time to stop and smell the ginger.

You picked a gorgeous spot on the island to come home to at night.

    Post deployment honeymoon

    Aloha all,

My wife and I will be spending our honeymoon on Kaanapali in May, and I%26#39;ve been researching various things that would be appealing to us. We originally wanted to attend a dinner cruise, but ruled that out shortly after doing a couple of searches through this forum. Our question is for the cocktail cruises, are they similar in that they are crowded and not worth the money, or are they a pretty good deal. Also, if there are some that are recommended, do any leave from the Kaanapali beach area.

At this point we%26#39;re willing to put up with anything that is less than perfect due to our extensive seperation. I am currently on deployment in Africa and our honeymoon was originally planned for last August, but the activation was a day prior to the wedding, so needless to say, we%26#39;re having to plan it for May, after I return. We will be staying in my parents Condo at the Marriott and since the Marriott Luau has been discontinued, what could be recommended. Also we would prefer something on Kaanapali, as we will want to enjoy spirits and not worry about driving. This will be my 3rd time to HI, but my wifes first, so I would love for it to be special. Thanks to all,

    Semper Fi

    Jon

    Post deployment honeymoon

You will love the Marriott right on Kaanapali. Make sure and let them know ahead of time that it is your honeymoon. I would call the front desk.

We like the Hyatt Luau. It is right next door so you can walk home!

We%26#39;ve seen many sunset sails that come in right by Whaler%26#39;s Village. It looks like a lot of fun.

    Enjoy your honeymoon!

    Post deployment honeymoon

Thanks Mauidreamr, I appreciate your help.

Old Lahaina Luau. Definitely. Good food, reasonbly strong drinks, and authentic dancing.

While the Old Lahaina Luau is something you probably only want to do once (how many times can you see that show, for crying out loud?) you must do it at least once!

If you%26#39;re under 40 pick the traditional seating. You sit on comfortable cushions. But it gets you down by the stage, and away from the clutter of people.

I thought the pig was a bit dry ... really, I didn%26#39;t get what was so special about pork cooked in sand. But it%26#39;s the show you%26#39;re there for, not the food. You won%26#39;t be completely disappointed in either.

If you two kids are looking for someplace cozy to ... you know ... reacquaint yourselves? ... check out some of the ';scenic lookouts'; on the way to Lahaina. Catch it at the right time of day when the traffic is low, and you can find a sunny hillside with no one around but the whales in the distance, and a perfect view of Lanai.

    Kayaking on Oahu

Can anyone recommend a good kayaking outfit on Oahu that will take you on a tour. We are looking for a half day trip somewhere scenic on the island. Looking for a moderate trip, nothing that will go to far out on the open ocean. Snorkling during the trip is ok, but want to kayak most of the time.

    Thanks!

    Kayaking on Oahu

    www.twogoodkayaks.com

They are located in Kailua, it looks like a great tour. They have a couple different tours to choose from. They seem pretty reasonable on their prices. The other companies in the same area seem to be around the same price.

    Honeymoon hotel

I am planning a weeks stay on Kauai as part of my Honeymoon in August. After doing some research it looks as though the Hyatt and Princeville resorts are going to be out of my reach financially. I have looked at the Sheraton, Radisson, Resortquest Islander, Marriot etc. but each seems to have many pros and cons. What I am asking is - could somebody who knows these hotels please advise us? Many thanks.

    Honeymoon hotel

Also check less expensive accommodations at castleresorts.com, e.g., the Kiahuna Plantation. Friends stayed there with family for their wedding on the shore at Poipu and were happy. I am not real sure if they have air-conditioning tho, but maybe some of their other hotels do. Marriott has three locations on Kauai...the newest (bought older resort and revamped) is Courtyard on the east side and the most expensive is the Waiohai Beach Resort on the south side. Most convenient to everything, walkable distances to restaurants and shops is the one at Nawiliwili Harbor (Kauai Marriott). Some reviews are iffy for the latter.

If you are very frugal look at Aloha Beach Resort at Lydgate Park area in Wailua/Kapaa.

    Aloha!

For me, there is no question...Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club....GOOD pool, nice beach, pretty grounds, good restaurants on-site, excellent location. They have some good deals going with 5th night FREE, $75 food credit and a free upgrade. It would be my choice.

  • Akaka Falls...........

We will be staying in Waikoloa for 6 nights, and then over to Hilo for 3 nights. We can%26#39;t miss Akaka Falls. Should we go from Waikoloa for the day, or from Hilo?

    Akaka Falls...........

    on your way to Hilo....

    Akaka Falls...........

You%26#39;ll be passing by the turnoff for Akaka Falls while driving to Hilo. Stop off and have lunch nearby before you reach Hilo.

What is funny is that I don%26#39;t put Akaka Falls as a must see. It%26#39;s neat, but it isn%26#39;t all that.

What I do consider a must see on that side of the island is a hike down to the point in the middle of Onomea Bay. Now THAT is a must see!

You can find information about this short hike on the web, look up the Donkey Trail and Ononea Bay

Here%26#39;s a link to a description of the Donkey Trail hike:

    www.instanthawaii.com/cgi-bin/hawaii…

    FYI...

There are actually 2 waterfalls at Akaka. Walk to the other falls first, as it is less dramatic, and also it%26#39;ll be more of a downhill hike, than if you see Akaka first.

    A3H Gold Card

I just stumbled upon this site and wondered if anyone had this card.

I looks like a nice savings for those of us who are trying do do as much as possible yet spend within our budget. Here the website.

Anyway please if you%26#39;ve heard of this card or have let me know what you think.

    www.hawaiifun.org

    A3H Gold Card

    oops no do do

    Just do LOL

    A3H Gold Card

I%26#39;m not sure how much we%26#39;ll use it once we%26#39;re in Hawaii, but I%26#39;ve already used it to reserve our Haleakala bike ride (using Maui Mountain Riders) and horseback ride (Mendes Ranch), and I think we%26#39;ve probably already saved about $75. Seems like a good deal to me!

    Thanks Soxgal78

Then I guess for the money it it paid for itself the first time you used it.

There seems to be quite allot of ways to apply it. I think I%26#39;ll get one.

    Have a great time.

    I know we will.

    Soxgal78 when do leave?

Monster.... We are neighbors. We live in Franklin and plan to leave for Maui in about 15 days. I have bought the Gold Card for every trip we%26#39;ve taken to Maui and recommend it highly. Just using it on a few things pays for itself. I also use it for Mendes, and we use it for Trilogy (it%26#39;s the only discount those two use).

    Hey WIS

    We are neightbors!

Are you longing for the warmth and sunshine too? We are Maui dreaming.

Can you tell me how the card works. I know using the Entertainment card we sometimes they need to know you have it up front, it that the same w/A3H?

Thanks so much for the info

Okay so i got the card as well... but with it cames this sheet of everything you can use it for. TELL ME IF I%26#39;M WRONG... but its very restricting isn%26#39;t it? Like for the Mendes Ranch, you can only take the lunch ride to get the discount. I thought we could use it for whatever and that doesn%26#39;t seem to be the case. Has anyone found this out or am i totally wrong?

    Your right

Some of the resatuarants have 1/2 hour time

    slots or on certain days.

This being the case I still think it%26#39;s worth it

    Monster

Yes, even though we don%26#39;t have snow cover (at the moment), the trip can%26#39;t come fast enough. As far as how the card is used. If you purchase it over the internet (or probably even if you call) you get the number right away, even before they mail the card to you. As for Mendes, I%26#39;ve always been able to use it no matter what the ride. They were one of the original sponsors. We%26#39;ve never used it for any of the restaurants, however. When are you going?

And to answer your question about the number up front, yes, the operators do usually ask for that.

    Thanks again WIS

We will be departing February 18th.

I%26#39;m so happy to see the sun shining again.

We sure had a long streak of gray days.

    I can%26#39;t believe the weather.

    50 degrees today!

I am not a snow bunny by any means and do not miss the snow, however I do find this weather pattern a bit strange.

My question was more toward using it when we%26#39;re dining and if they need to see the card before we order.

I guess I should call the restaurants and

    ask them their policy first.

    When do you leave?

    rental car prices

what is the price range for a rental car for a week?

    rental car prices

depends on what car, what agency, what week, where you want to drive it

    Figure between 250 and 700 a week

    you wll have to call

    Hawaii sightseeing

We are going on a Hawaiian cruise and will visit 4 islands. We would like to get away from the shore excursions through the cruiseline and do our own thing. I would like to know where the best snorkeling spots are and other must see sights. Also, please let me know of good companies for sightseeing.

    Hawaii sightseeing

Before you get the answers to your questions I have to give you one word of warning.

If you do not use the cruise lines tours and you get back to the ship late, it is not going to be waiting for you. You will be paying for a flight to whatever the next port of call is.

Just wanted to give you a heads up.

    Hawaii sightseeing

your question is so vast and non spacific that I could write a book..... since others have done this ...pick up one of the many good ones and research a bit.....then ask pointed questions on what excited your brain.

    The volcano national park

    Capt Cook snorkel....best in state

Pearl Harbor... a must for any American

Air tour of Kauai best there is

Air tour of Hawaii only way to see thtis huge place

Hana road in Maui..overrated but still great

Lahina on maui... a great beach town

Waterfalls of Kohala mountains largest in Hawaii....almost 3000 ft

Helping Hawaiidan cut his lawn, trim the palms and go to the dump..... a thrilling personal experience filled with warm huuman emotion in a great island experience...participation is limited...reserve your spot soon.....

Ah Dan so that answers the question of ';Where do the locals hang out'; that is asked so often.....at the dump!

    Brighton.....dont tell anyone....

When you come I will show you; and play IZ on my CD.....

We have a very classy dumps... with a green dump, a metal dump, and a stuff dump....Can even show you the recycle redempton center and the new glass and cardboard one...... You will never see Hawaii in the same way again... instead of waisting your time on some stupid beach... you can discover gold in the discarded beer, soda and water bottles that folks love to throw.....

Would you like the morning or afternoon tour.

I have looked at books but there is too much to choose from. I thought it would be better to ask for recommendations. I checked out Captain Cook and that looked great, thanks. I love to be outdoors and away from crowds. I would love to see the volcanoes and ziplining in the rainforest, but I need to try and keep the cost down as much as possible.

Regarding the ship leaving - I know that is a possibility but we are docked for about day and half at each island, I%26#39;m not too concerned. I would rather do what I want to do and be away from the crowds. It is also cheaper to do it on our own.

I forgot, someone told me to stay away from helicopters in Hawaii, they are dangerous.

We dont have any ziplines on Hawaii...in our rainforest....think that is Costa Rica.

Helos are more fragile than fix-wing and thus will have more incidents. They are safer than yor car....so are airplanes

on the Big island the thing to do is

    1. tour the volcano of foot

    2. Take a tour by air Big island Air ( no web site) around the island tour ( waterfalls to lava)

    3. Snorkel-dolphin-whale trip to Capt Cook with Fairwinds or Dolphin Discoveries.

mhart, helicopters in Hawai%26#39;i are no more dangerous than they are anywhere else.

Better make it the afternoon tour Dan. I want to be sure all the flies are awake and active.

Meant to ask, how is the bottle deposit thing going? I know when we started ours here there was a lot of resistance but man are the highways ever clean these days.

in hawaiii we catch on slow.....very..very..very slow..... as an example the powers are consisderiing a road approved in 1960..... and want to do more studies.....

Does that give yo an idea of progress here ???

Only 37 more days at the gym-Anyone else with me?

37 more days at the gym BEFORE we go! Yikes! I%26#39;m thinking 8 pounds is not unreasonable to lose before then. It%26#39;d be nice if I had someone to be accountable to sit up wise. (for some reason, I%26#39;ll run, and do weights, but I really lame out on the sit ups)

    Who%26#39;s with me?

Only 37 more days at the gym-Anyone else with me?

lol....i was in your same boat Santy. at home i am happy with my winter time weight, but wearing a bikini is different. but i would not stress too much about it. we just returned from maui yesterday, and it is nothing like somewhere like south beach. there are very few super skinny model types on the beaches i went to. so good luck with your fitness; maui is wonderful and i am sure you will have a great time.

Only 37 more days at the gym-Anyone else with me?

I have 39 more days and 10 pounds to go! I have been doing tae-bo and so far I have lost 15 pounds! I hear you about the winter weight, here in upstate NY you need it to stay warm!! There was no way I was going on a trip of a lifetime overweight. I will be looking at our pictures for years and I don%26#39;t want to see myself chubby. Good luck with your eight, you can definetely do it!!

Wow! You lost 15 pounds, good for you! I wish I would have been motivated a lot sooner. I hear what you%26#39;re saying about the photos, I feel the same way! Keep going! I%26#39;m excited about going to the gym today! Thanks for the motivation!

    I don%26#39;t get it.

When you get there you will see folks from toddlers to 100 year olds....from Twiggy to the Good Year blimp.....

If you are trying to get in shape to fit it forget it, do it for you because frankly, no one cares what other people on the beach look like unless they are trolling for a mate.

this site is too funny cause we all do the same silly things buy the way I have 24 days to lose 6 more pounds which is what I was went to kauai last year!

try sitting on an exercise ball at the computer and crunch between replies!

I%26#39;m getting fit because I want to, not because of a trip. The trip is my goal, my something to work towards. A certain day, if you will. I usually go to the gym, but I haven%26#39;t been making it a priority, until recently. I feel good when I go. Like I told my daughter the other day, I%26#39;m not any skinnier, but I sure feel like I am.

I don%26#39;t need to impress anyone. My hubby loves me with a little extra because I have shape now! I just want to feel good in a bathing suit. I may not get to that point, but who cares? As soon as I%26#39;m in that water, I won%26#39;t care how lumpy I am! LOL!

Good for you Santy. I hope I did not offend with my earlier post. General fitness is important to good health. And it is always nice to feel good about yourself.

Offended? LOL! Of course not! Bill mentioned that he didn%26#39;t get it. I was just helping him understand where I was comin%26#39; from.

On the contrary, I am thankful for any encouragement!

I am right there with you..2 hour work outs a day.....I%26#39;ve gone from 325lb to 142 been doing this for 2 years now, trying to get the last 8 pounds off, oh it%26#39;s sheer determination, and I don%26#39;t mine the sit ups (Crunches) I have a problem with push-ups...

Leave for maui in 25 days....

    under 25 car rental

I am 24 years old and need a car rental in Maui. I have booked with Hawaii Discount Car Rental because they say I will not be charged a ';young driver fee';.

Does anyone have any experience with them?

I am nervous I will arrive and the car rental agency will still charge me the massive fee for being young!

    under 25 car rental

    bump!

    under 25 car rental

please help! Any info is much appreciated! Thanks!

yes i have booked with that agency but would suggest calling the local car rental company you are booked with and quoting your booking number get verification. Our booking with Budget through that agency in December had several promises that did not materialize. Suggest Kihei Car Rental for several reasons. No extra charges including under 25, local cars that blend into the landscape...great for avoiding breakins, and even though they are in Kihei, they pick you up at airport and return you there.

  • Luaus,Worth It?

We are going to the OLL in Maui for the second half of our honeymoon. Do you think we should check one out in Kauai also to get us into the spirit, or is one luau enough? What other nighttime activities do you recommend aside from going out to dinner?

    Luaus,Worth It?

The luau shows on Kaua%26#39;i are different than OLL, more showy/touristy. I haven%26#39;t been to the one at the old Coconut Coast resort since it changed into - what is it - Tihati? Most of the food will be pretty much the same stuff but could be better or worse at various places. Drinks at OLL had liquor in them, as opposed to the few drops at the other places I%26#39;ve been. Personally, I think you%26#39;ll find plenty to do on Kaua%26#39;i and won%26#39;t miss doing a luau there.

    Luaus,Worth It?

We went to the Old Lahaina Luau in October and thought it was extraordinary. A beautiful setting (sun setting over the ocean), potent drinks, great entertainment and even good food.

I wouldn%26#39;t want to go to another one.

I agree with the other reviews - one luau during your honeymoon will be enough. They%26#39;re not romantic and also, they%26#39;re quite expensive. Treat yourself to a lovely romantic meal instead!

p.s. I can thoroughly recommend the Hukilau Lanai in Kappa. Although it%26#39;s not an overally romantic restaurant, the food and service are fantastic, especially the warm chocolate pudding. Yum, yum!

p.s. the nightlife in Kauai is much quieter/low key compared to Maui...

I second the recommendation for Huki Lau. It may be my favorite nice restaurant on Kaua%26#39;i.

We go to at least one Luau every year; alternating islands.(Old Lahaina in less than 6 weeks) Seems to partially satisfy Mrs. kama%26#39;s ';we need to dress-up'; quota and nice place to visit with folks from here-there-n-everywhere. Almost always pleasant (Sheraton Keauhou on Big Island the most recent exception), but as far as true educational content is concerned, let%26#39;s just say you probably won%26#39;t wear out your pencil taking notes.

If you decide to try one, might want to take along a Mai Tai booster bottle; perhaps a stop at Long%26#39;s Drug Store for a flask of Bacardi?

As far as life in the Kauai Fast Lane is concerned, hopefully you%26#39;ll be blessed with a post by OPA Kwils!

One more thing; there are several good east coast (Wailua area) Luaus, but if a sunset is important to you, seems like the best is at the Hyatt Poipu. The eats are above average, can usually find a discount in rags such as ';This Week on Kauai'; and they do (at least used to) have a Fire Dancer (amazing photos). Believe they still offer ';preferred seating'; @ a reasonable price; gets you up-close and increases the odds of success if you would be interested in something as mean %26amp; nasty as volunteering your Honey for the onstage Hula Lessons!

Has anyone been to a luau on Kauai? Does the Hyatt have one?

Any suggestions for Hotel close to Kona Airport?

Staying at Hapuna Prince 4 nights, then 3 nights at Four Seasons. Can anyone suggest a hotel near the Volcano and then a hotel for the last night close to Kona airport so we are not driving far for the early am departure home? Thanks in advance for any help

Any suggestions for Hotel close to Kona Airport?

    The Sheraton is even better.

A hotel in volcano would be Kiluea Lodge or Voolcano house.... both at the park and excellent.

If you liked the 4 seasons...it is the closest to the airport in time. Store your excess luggage, travel with an overnight bag to Volcano and back.... that is what HD would do

Honokane Nui hike (part of Pololu Valley hike) - BI

Aloha! Has anyone ever done the Honokane Nui hike? I believe this hike continues from Pololu Valley into the next valley. We had thought about doing the hike from Waimea to the back of Waipio Valley, but since it isn%26#39;t open, we are considering this other hike. I would appreciate any comments re this hike - duration, level of hiking ability, general thoughts.

    Mahalo!

Honokane Nui hike (part of Pololu Valley hike) - BI

I haven not done it but have flown over it many times.... This is a poorly maintained trail over very wild terrain.....I would rate as super severe...... It should take about a day or 2 one way if you are in good shape and have mountaineering skills. you should be of expert level as a back-packer or hiker .....

This is very rough jungle with lots of cliffs, river fords and wilderness conditions.... where it rains 200 inches a year...

Contact Hawaii Forest and trails for better info

Honokane Nui hike (part of Pololu Valley hike) - BI

I have made this hike and it is a full day, and yes, you should be in decent shape. It will be more strenous than the White Road hike which you say is now closed (I haven%26#39;t been on Trip Advisor for a long while, so I did not know that.

It is not impossible, but not a walk in the park, either. I never felt that I was in danger, though I went in October a few years ago and there is likely more rain concerns this time of year than when I went.

one of the big hazards on this hike it that of changing weather......it is very unstable on the north east coast..... and is its own micro climate...... and yes you can get hypothermia in Hawaii.... prepare well and you will enjoy the effort.....

    Packing questions

We are packing very light. One backpack for each person (Maybe two for Mom)! We land at Maui at 10:00 pm so we will not be able to hit costco. So I want to bring what I can fit.We are staying at Sheraton, Wailea Marriott %26amp; Kahana Falls.

Is one brand of sunblock better than another for Maui%26#39;s hot sun?

Do you rec bringing our own snorkel? The thoughts of putting a used one in my mouth is not that appealing!

Do you suggest we bring towels?

    Thanks

    Packing questions

Hi - just got back a couple of weeks ago. For what its worth, we just used a waterproof/sport type of sunblock with an spf of 30 (we weren%26#39;t interested in frying). We definitely took our own snorkels. Besides the lack of appeal of using a ';community snorkel';, we%26#39;re just used to using our own. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about towels, they are plentiful at the hotels and we never had any problems with anyone bothering them. Also at our hotel (not sure if it%26#39;s that way everywhere), they didn%26#39;t have ';towel police'; so it wouldn%26#39;t have mattered if something had happened to our towels. Hope this helps and you have a really great time.

Road From Hana - Planning questions

Going back to Maui in June, first trip was 9 years ago. Our children were very young then, so we went halfway to Hana. Now, they are older, 10 and 12, and we would like to make the whole round trip.

Looking at some sites, it appears that Pi%26#39;ilani highway from Han through Kaupo, and Ulupalakua is a bit rough, but certainly drivable.

What can one expect for timing going all the way around starting up in Kaalinpani? We are not going to rush, and want to take our time.

We figure on leaving at 5:00 AM. Is that too early?

    Thanks for the help!

Road From Hana - Planning questions

From Kaa%26#39;anapali - 5am is probably okay. The kids will hopefully sleep until sunrise. By then you should be near Ha%26#39;iku. Starting that early, you can certainly make it all the way around, but it will be a long day. You won%26#39;t be back until sunset. You can definately drive all the way around though. The road is rough, but good enough. Plus, the terrian is really different there and the contrast is nice.

Make sure you have a cooler with drinks and snacks. There are few places to stop. Hana is a beautiful drive. I have family in the mountains in NC and Virginia, so the curves don%26#39;t bother me. Enjoy it:-)

ps - also be sure to go all the way around the north west shore. It%26#39;s a itty bitty road at the very top, but just gorgeous.

Road From Hana - Planning questions

    Hi,

It took us around 12 hours too from Pa%26#39;ia. I would think about heading back at least one hour to 1 1/2 hours before sunset from Oheo Gulch area.

The road is driveable but I would not want to do it when it is dark. Once you hit the regular highway, not a problem.

    Chris

We left at 6:00 from Kaanapali and had breakfast in Kahului at 6:35. We left Kahului at 7:00 and began the journey. We spent a lot of time seeing almost everything that Maui revealed had for us to see, which left us at Oheo Gulch at 3:30/4:00. We spent some time swimming there and then took the drive around...WHICH WAS WELL WORTH IT. I feel bad for those that turn around and go back the same way. We stopped for some sites and for pictures. It was a very memorable experience.

    All, tyhanks for the info.

    Darqueta,

How long did it take from Oheo gulch back to Kaanapali on the Pi%26#39;ilani highway?

if your maui trip is short( 5 to 7 days), ignore this advice. If not... here goes.

Stay the night in Hana...your trip will be more informative and less stressful. We have been going to Maui annually since 1992 and always suggest this to friends and family visiting for the first time and have always been rewarded with a big thankyou.

Using Maui Revealed as your guide, do the Paia to Hana portion the first day...you will not come close to seeing it all but if you do find something that appeals to you personally you won%26#39;t feel under the gun to move on.

On the second day you can backtrack early to revisit sites close to Hana or carry on to the many, not to be missed, sights on the back side. You will reach Oheo Gulch long before the crowds and have the pools to yourselves. Don%26#39;t forget Lindbergs Grave...magical. The road, except for a short one lane gravel section is actually easier than the north side. The driver can sometimes take their eye off the road for a few seconds.

There are several places to stay that are clean and reasonable.(google Hana) I know it means leaving an expensive hotel room vacant for a night but I still think it is worth it...you may even decide like we did to come back and split your next vacation between Hana and the West side.

Aloha and have a great vacation

air travel-best time to book for Sept

I have been researching air travel for Sept from Baltimore to Oahu..in 1 week the price jumped from $750 to $850!

Not sure why. Is this too soon to book?

I know that Sept is %26#39;low%26#39; season. should I wait to book?

Also, when is best time (for your body) to leave; afternoon and arrive the next morning or late evening and arrive the next afternoon??

    Thanks!

air travel-best time to book for Sept

The two schools of thought are:

Book early in case the prices rise.

Book last minute to get the best deal.

Personally, I book early. I would hate to make all the other plans and then find out I either can%26#39;t get a flight at all (which can happen) on the dates I want or the only seats left are the expensive one%26#39;s.

The best plan, but a ticket at what you think is an OK price then STOP looking...you will only get mad if the price drops.

As to which time to fly, it depends. I sleep quite well on a plane. There is a 6 hour difference in time but it probably won%26#39;t bother you once you arrive in paradise, it is like a caffene jolt.

air travel-best time to book for Sept

    Aloha!

You can always use a travel wholesaler and book now for a good price. usually, you can book a fly/drive or a complete package and save $ on airfare that way.

    Bryan Brown

    BBrown9825@aol.com

I have been working with a travel agent who keeps pushing to big resorts; thus, we have booked our stay at 2 out of the 4 islands thus far (Kauia Country Inn and Maui Kai condo); however, we still need to find lodging on the Big Island and Oahu.

In checking air from Baltimore, last week the cheapest price was $756 thru United and this week it%26#39;s jumped $100!

Not sure if 8 months is too soon to book or not. Not really sure of what is a good price either.

7 to 800 sounds good....from there the best you could probably hope for would be in the high 600%26#39;s and to me, to worry about a couple hundred bucks when you will be shelling out thousands is silly...I have a feeling the price of oil will not be dropping anytime soon so neither will the airfares but if you wanted to chance it, you might be able to save a bit by waiting till July to book. Then again, you might pay twice as much.

I just saw $683 per person flying f/BWI to Oahu and then from Maui back to Balt.

American Airlines. Maybe I should book it??

is it better to go home in the afternoon or late evening flight? which is better on the body??

Sounds like a good price to me. I would book it and then don%26#39;t look for a cheaper one, just keep planing your trip once the airfare is booked.

I prefer the lateer flights (more time in paradise) plus you will probably end up sleeping most of the way anyway...

I am a little leary about flying American Airlines..with the past history of terrorists picking on US airlines...esp American...scares and all...am I being neurotic here?

Chicogirl, I can still tell you where the locals stay when they go visiting other islands.........usually other people%26#39;s living rooms. For reals, most locals stay with family.

yeah those locals always have somebody to stay with for free on other islands, even though i offer them my guesthouse rooms for 40.- kama%26#39;aina rate. perhaps i should lower the rent? lol

LOL I think I%26#39;ve only stayed at a major resort once on Kauai! But your place sounds great, Hale! Maybe I can convince my boyfriend to take the ferry over for a couple days. I%26#39;ll be on Oahu next month on business and staying at the Hyatt. When I get back b/f and I will be going on vacation in the mainland. Half the vacation will spent at families and the other half camping in Yosemite!

you got family on molokai too?

Nah, had some friends whose families lived there but they%26#39;ve moved. Some to Oahu and others to Maui. You know how it is......employment opportunities are not Molokai%26#39;s strong points.

yes it is sad, all our friends are broke. but somehow they live. hunt, fish, swap, odd jobs, foodstamps, section 8. i guess with everybody knowing each other in a small community nobody is too hungry. the down and out are more visible in large cities. we know some guys who live in their vans. lucky the van still runs.

best time of day to go home from hawaii?

is it better to go home in the afternoon or late evening flight? which is better on the body?

    I love in Maryland. Thanks!

best time of day to go home from hawaii?

I guess it might depend if you can sleep on a plane, some people can%26#39;t. I like to leave later, sleep on the way back and get back early the next day. That works if you%26#39;re flying direct, not if you have to make connections. It%26#39;s a long day either way.

';I love in Maryland';? Too much information! :)

best time of day to go home from hawaii?

Since under either alternative you will be flying overnight in order to get all the way back east, and suffer from the ';red-eye blues'; whether you take the earlier or later flight, I would opt for the later one just to have an extra afternoon in Hawaii.

Also, if you are leaving from Honolulu, the airport is exceptionally busy in the early PM when most flighs leave for the mainland. Much less so in the later evening.

    Asking a favor.

I would LOVE some of those free brochures that they give away. When we were in Maui there were tons, and I wish I would have had them before our trip so that I could have planned our trip better. I would be willing to pay for somebody%26#39;s time and postage if they could do this for me. A nice fat package of goodies would be so AWESOME!!!

    Thanks

A lot of the brochures change weekly, monthly or quarterly. When is your trip?

    Asking a favor.

We won%26#39;t be going until December, but I don%26#39;t mind if any coupons etc. have expired, I%26#39;m just dying to learn more:)

Mom...those very same brochures are online.

    mzmmom,

If your appetite isn%26#39;t satisfied with the on-line stuff, let me know and I%26#39;ll send you one of everything! Well....maybe not everything, that could get kinda expensive!

    Hey there bjbert,

Are you getting enough rain up your way? Crazy, huh? Maybe you should head back to Kauai soon!! How%26#39;s about next month?

Thanks!! I will look through the websites and let you know if I need (want) more!!

    Rebecca

Those are awesome sites, I think that is good enough for now.

    Mahalo,

    Rebecca

kwils11..looks like we are all back from our holidays safe and sound. No singing in the rain along this coast..hanging on for winds tonight and possibly snow down to 2500 ft. Chomping the bit now for 2/3-3/3.

    Whats the traffic like!

We will be arriving on a Saturday morning about 9:30am and would like to know if the traffic is heavy for that time of morning. We are unsure whether to catch a taxi or shuttle bus to our hotel and have been told that if heavy traffic catch a shuttle!!!!

    Whats the traffic like!

Only take a cab if you absolutely must. They are expensive here. All the locals take the bus. Tourist trolleys are too expensive too. Save that cash for drinks!

    Whats the traffic like!

Traffic won%26#39;t be as heavy on a Sat morning because you won%26#39;t have commuter traffic. But, you will still have a significant number of locals heading to the beach since the weekends are really the only days they get to go...

Weekend arrivals are usually less hectic, unless you arrive at the time of a major sporting event.

A couple of additional considerations; the city bus (not to confuse with Shuttle)system has fairly restrictive luggage limitations (backpack-ok, a couple of suitcases- uh uh).

Driving a car/fighting the traffic/paying high parking fees in Waikiki are things I try to limit to the extent possible. There are many Shuttles, but depending on where you%26#39;re staying, the preceeding drop-offs can be tiresome; when you have a whole bunch of things you%26#39;d rather be doing).

Our usual routeine is to take a cab from HNL to Waikiki (had early flight last year and the ';with tip Oahu cost of about $30'; was less than home to Albuquerque Airport!). We do rent a car while in Waikiki for a day-trip around the Island (or longer when we also stay on the North Shore or Kailua). You%26#39;ll find fairly good car rental deals (much lower than @ the airport)in things like ';This Week on Oahu'; available in the baggage claim area and all over town.

(PS: mrsfuzz-Thank you for pepper comment)

I hear traffic can be pretty bad. Can anyone say its as bad as LA, NY, or Atlanta? Is just is just mainly rush hours in the morning and afternoon, or can it be all day?

    Kama,

    de nada.

    atlmom:

Traffic is at it%26#39;s worst during morning commute into Honolulu from approx 6-9 a.m. and out of town from 3-6 p.m. It%26#39;s a big city and has big city traffic. For example, my husband works just 15 miles away and it is an hour drive.

Biggest problem on the island is that there aren%26#39;t enough alternate routes. If there is an accident, it can back traffic up for hours. If the accident involves a fatality, they%26#39;ll shut the road down completely (in one direction)--even if it%26#39;s H-1 freeway and it%26#39;s rush hour.

    Jillybean...

Traffic will be ';passable'; on Sat AM.

But make sure to tell the taxi driver to go via Nimitz Highway, and not the freeway, because even on Sat mornings the freeway can get fairly congested from Middle Street to Punahou, while Nimitz should be OK (plus the views are better after you pass through Iwilei).

As to the gentlelady from Atlanta%26#39;s query:

Yes, Honolulu traffic is as bad as any major city during rush hours, lightening up a little bit (but still very slow) during the rest of the day. And, Waikiki can become all but gridlocked on Friday/Saturday nights.

The roads in Honolulu are mostly older, narrow, full of parked cars (parking is a huge problem on an island), with driveways everywhere. The freeway was ';reverse-engineered'; into the city so the on/off-ramps are the worst you have ever seen.

The salvation is that many of the major roads are all or mostly one-way (Beretania, King, Kalakaua, Ala Wai, etc.) which allows them to time the stop lights fairly well. And, no matter how crowded it is, being an island, the congestion can only extend so far...not stretch over four counties like Southern California.

    Hilton Waikoloa Village

This is our 1st stay so which tower should we stay in? I%26#39;m a Diamond member and it%26#39;s only me, wife and teen-age daughter. Which tower has the largest rooms, modern bathrooms, and balcony. We probably prefer view and quiet. Insight would be helpful.

    Hilton Waikoloa Village

If you are a diamond member, you can get upgraded to a suite...we like Ocean Tower...quieter, free breakfast and appetizers, good ocean views...you need to know that this property needs work, lots of wear and tare and short on maintenance...food/drinks are EXPENSIVE...rooms are good...maybe tight for 3...push for suite...spa is good not great and is included with Diamond...valet parking is bad-$12.00/day...I think all rooms are the same size except for suites...you MUST buy, ';Hawaii, The Big Island Revealed'; (Doughty/Friedman)...they cover every square inch of the island...good luck.

    Hilton Waikoloa Village

    check with pauls opinion....

You have the Kings shopping center about a mile down the road andit has a collection of good food and economic eats.

Plan on Imari, and Kamulea Provision co. at the Hilton. At Kings it is Roys.. which i think is over priced and not that good, and Merrimans market cafe.

try to hit Bamboo 18 miles north in Hawi.. the best ambiance going and food to match for half the Waikoloa prices And Merrimans in Waimea the finest restraunt on the island ( Zagat, Fromers,Fodor,NY times)

Big Island revealed is good for beaches and roads but is not what it should be for food and lodging and activities....

    hawaiidan,

I%26#39;ll be bringing my family of four to the big island later this year. Do you have a recommendation for a good read for choosing the best accomodations?

    dutch

For a family.....I would stay at Waikoloa Beach in a condo, get a hilton water park pass for the days you want and save parking food and room costs..... you can get a nice condo for 4 for 225.....hotels will cost you about 350 a day with parking tax and about 250 a day meals.......

n kona The outtrigger OR SHERATON FOR HOTELS

Thats the best deal this side of puerto suello hill and Marinwood...

Thanks for the response hawaiidan. You%26#39;re loaded with great information and it%26#39;s greatly appreciated. It seems you even know about my neck of the woods... I like your advice on the condo idea. Here is what we%26#39;re trying to decide between:

    Hilton

    Marriott

    Outrigger Fairway Villas

    ResortQuest Shores

    ResortQuest Colony Villas

    Sheraton

Our young daughters (4 and 10) really like the hotel resort idea with pools and slides. My wife and I like the condo idea with the ability to eat some meals in addition to the having an extra room or two available during our week stay. All of us would like to have beach access at the hotel if possible. Any additional guidance you could provide would be tremendously helpful.

One more thing, are there any books you would recommend reading to help us have a great time in paradise?

    Pearl Harbor and Swap Meet

My husband, 2 kids and I will be going to Hawaii in April. We are staying at the HHV because of the information on this site. I am trying to book some tours for us and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about how to get to Pearl Harbor and the Swap Meet on the same day. I saw a tour that went to both places on one of my late night internet searches - but have not been able to find it again since. If anyone has any information on this tour I would be VERY grateful!!!

If not, I was wondering if it would be expensive, or if it makes sense to just take a taxi to Pearl Harbor early and then take another one from there to the swap meet and then another from there to the hotel? Obviously, we are not planning a renting a car. :) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Pearl Harbor and Swap Meet

Hi there. Rent a car for the day. They can be had for $30.00 a day. It is cheap and would most pay for itself after the second cab ride, plus you have it for the day. Go somewhere else.

    Pearl Harbor and Swap Meet

Definately rent a car. Also, since you have a car, check out the northern (windward) part of the island. It is really the most beautiful area. Just time it so that you don%26#39;t get caught in rush hour traffic....

I would also rent a car for the day, which is what I am planning to do. If not an option, try The Bus. Takes a while to get there, but would be an adventure. Check out thebus.org, they also tell you what bus to take.

  • Best Restaurants near Waikiki Beach

What are the best, reasonably priced restaurants near Waikiki Beach?

    Best Restaurants near Waikiki Beach

everyone talks about DUKES being crowded. We found that for an early breakfast or late lunch/early dinner it is the place to be!

Breakfast buffet for $12 something is a deal ...

and if you go at 4:00 (before the party crowd) you can get a nice light bite and a drink in peace.

The steak house upstairs is also good.. We paid about $200.00 for dinner for 4 with a bottle of wine. Don%26#39;t think places like the Cheesecake Factory will save you much ~ after a 45 minute wait and not great service our bill for 4 was almost the same..... after day three, we realized that we traveled all the way to Hawaii and would stop penny pinching...

    Best Restaurants near Waikiki Beach

We liked the Shorebird, where you cook your own meat. Thought that Dukes was a bit overrated. Tiki%26#39;s also had good food. But it seemed most places cost about the same, so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about the extra couple bucks at some of the nicer restaurants.

We did like Aloha Sushi though, very reasonable prices and great food. Its is past the hilton, though its more of a take-out place. We went for lunch and took our food to the beach to eat.

We like the Shorebird as well. Duke%26#39;s is ok for a quick appy or drink in the middle of the day IMHO; but the Shorebird has much nicer food and plenty of it as well.

The prices were a little better too. BUT..the Lava Flows are way better at Duke%26#39;s!!!

The locals secret spot is the Hau Tree in the Kaimana Beach Hotel (Diamond Head section of Waikiki).

Just got back, Suntory Restaurant in Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center has a lunch special in their Teppanyaki room. For dinner, Top of Waikiki has a sunset dining special. Aqua Cafe in Waikiki Shopping Plaza has good prices that you can find a coupon in the many coupon books that you find in the hotel or on the street.

If you haven%26#39;t tried Loco Moco, you should give it a try. I recommend the Aqua Cafe, in the food court below the Waikiki Shopping Plaza.

If you are willing to drive a short ways, I recommend the Maple Garden on Isenberg for Chinese food at a great price (especially for lunch). Or, the Dixie Grill near the Ward Center for BBQ.

Travelling to LA and Hawaii in January. I am very new to tipping. Do I tip at all restaurants, fast food outlets and cafes? How much do I tip?

Beside Hilo Hattie%26#39;s is a Zippy%26#39;s, it is my fav restaurant in Ohau...In the Ward Warehouse there is a Spaghetti Factory, great place...If you can find a Porgy%26#39;s Smorgy, it is a great buffet, there used to be one a block away from Outrigger Reef on the Beach but the entire block was demolished...shame, there was a great ice cream place there...Have a great time!

Another vote for the Shorebird. We had a great meal last month and it was a wonderful experience. The ahi tuna was incredible - and they had a lovely atmosphere. We thought the price was very reasonable and we didn%26#39;t have to wait to be seated. We got a table near the bar - there was an hour wait for a window seat. We stayed for drinks after and were able to see the fireworks at the Hilton. Have a great trip.

My husband and I really enjoyed Tiki%26#39;s, which was atop the ResortQuest Waikiki Beach (I think). We went there on Christmas Day for dinner and had fantastic service and the food was excellent. It was a little on the pricy side (for two teachers) but everything is pricy there.

Questions about Feb time in Oahu, military discounts etc.

Me and my fiance are going there on our honeymoon Feb 6th-13th, so in about 6.5months, and I heard that it%26#39;s pretty rainy during that time. This is my third trip to Oahu, and my fiances first. He is active dute military USAF, does anyone know any military discounts that we might be able to get for Luas etc?

The only time I%26#39;ve ever been to Oahu is during the April time, I haven%26#39;t been there since 2001, and LOL I was 17 at the time, so now at 22, I would love to know the ';hot spots'; and some cool things to do.

    Thanks for any information

Questions about Feb time in Oahu, military discounts etc.

I would just ask everywhere I made reservations. I remember seeing on numerous websites that said they offer discounts to military personel. Of course since it didnt pertain to me I ignored it and now cant remember where I saw it at.

Questions about Feb time in Oahu, military discounts etc.

    Try this link.

    www.military.com/Travel/Home/0,13396,,00.html

There are discounts of all kinds offered in Hawaii, some specificly for the military.

If you decide to visit the Big Island look into booking a cabin inside the Volcanos National Park at KMC, it is a military owned camp with very nice cabins for rent at very resonable prices.

Just noticed in another thread that you will be staying at an Outrigger hotel. They have their own military desk. You might want to check with them regarding discounts:

    outrigger.com/…

I forgot to mention we booked our stay at the Outrigger on the Reef. We got a real good deal on Expedia.com. Since he%26#39;s deployed right now I had to make these decisions alone, but it worked out well.

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian village before and it was great and another hotel on Lewers street, I can%26#39;t remember the name of the hotel, oh well, but this place looked pretty good, and I remember it being next to the HHV and were only 22 and 23 yrs old so we don%26#39;t need this huge ';luxury'; stay. Were gonna be out and about all the time, I heard they do upgrades there alot so I%26#39;m hoping we get a nice room.

You could of stayed at the Hale Koa. It%26#39;s the military hotel. But if you got a great deal from expedia than stick with it. You can buy all your tickets at the MWR office. There is one right next to the NEX near Pearl Harbor. Alot of companies will offer a military discount but sometimes their discount is not as cheap as the MWR. For instance, when I was there back in May we got tickets for the Atlantis submarine ride for $17.00 when they are normally $80.

Plus each month the MWR has monthly specials from different companies. They can also recommend which companies to use. We were going to use a particular company for parasailing but the lady at the MWR office told us not to because that company has alot of complaints and cancels it%26#39;s trips alot.

I do know that the MWR also has discounted tickets to luaus. Plus they rent snorkeling gear, surf boards, kyacks, boogie boards for real cheap!!

With a military ID you can go to Bellows AFB on the windward side of the island and enjoy the beach there. It%26#39;s my favorite!!

Here%26#39;s some info to contact them:

ITT @ the NEX, Mall at Pearl Harbor

    Phone: (808) 422-2757

    Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 7 PM

    Saturday: 9 AM - 5 PM

    Sunday/Holidays: 9 AM - 3 PM

    Location: Bldg. 631, Pearl Harbor

check out this web site for more info also:

    http://www.greatlifehawaii.com/Activity/listActivity.asp?catid=38%26amp;catname=Information%2C+Tickets+%26+Travel+%28ITT%29

Note: Price lists are available via email. Just contact us for more information.

MWR does have discount prices for all the luaus on the island, dinner cruises, snorkeling/SCUBA excursions, PCC, Kualoa Ranch, etc. Definitely visit the one at the NEX near Pearl Harbor--they are open 7 days a week and offer tons of activities at discounts, including interisland.

FYI...Hilo Hattie (major souvenir/clothing store) has a 20% discount w/military ID that isn%26#39;t really advertised.

A fun place for dinner near your hotel is Tiki%26#39;s Bar %26amp; Grill.

I wouldn%26#39;t worry too much about your Feb. visit--we had friends here at that time last year and they enjoyed wonderful weather with minimal rain. Of course it%26#39;s possible, but nothing to obsess over. Congrats, and have a great time.

    IA,

    ';FYI...Hilo Hattie (major souvenir/clothing store) has a 20% discount w/military ID that isn%26#39;t really advertised. ';

Is that on top of the regular discounts?

    re Hilo Hattie military discount

I guess I%26#39;m not sure, based on my purchases. I think for sale items, definitely. However, not sure if you could combine another coupon/offer w/the military discount. It couldn%26#39;t hurt to try!

Thanks IA...I just asked because it always seems that instore (not counting coupons) they have a 2 for 1 going....

Also, do you know if it applies to retired military?

Place to stay: Waikiki vs. Kailua

Which is a better place to stay at... Waikiki or Kailua?

Also I just read somewhere about making sure the B%26amp;Bs and places you rent are legal? Supposedly some places advertise rentals, only to realize that when you get there, it%26#39;s all fake and illegal. Anyone know anything about this and how to be aware on what to rent?

Place to stay: Waikiki vs. Kailua

I would definitely recommend staying at Waikiki. Kailua has a nice beach that is far from crowded, but there wasn%26#39;t much around it in terms of shopping and restaurants and it seemed a little difficult getting there. Waikiki has everything you would need- malls, galleries, spas, restaurants, etc. There is so much to do and you can always find something to keep you interested. However, it can get very crowded and quite noisy. On weekends you can enjoy the public hula show near Duke%26#39;s statue. But if you%26#39;re looking for peace and quiet, Kailua may suit you a little better.

Sorry, I%26#39;m not familiar with B%26amp;Bs.

    Enjoy your time in Hawaii!

Place to stay: Waikiki vs. Kailua

It very much depends what you want from your holiday. Kailua has a beautiful beach, but has a very rural, laid back approach to life. If you are happy to just chill then it will be the perfect place. If you want more in the way of nightlife etc then Waikiki will be the better choice.

    Angel....

Meaning no disrespect at all, if you have to ask, you should probably stay in Waikiki.

Kailua is more appropriate for seasoned Oahu visitors who are looking for a serene, low-key location well-away from the attractions.

If its your first time to the island, you will want to see all of the sights, shops, restaurants, history and attractions that Honolulu has to offer. And, you won%26#39;t want to be driving over the Pali Highway to town every day.

We couldn%26#39;t decide where to stay so we divided it 3 ways -- a few days in Kailua, a few days in Haleiwa, a few days in Waikiki. It sure made booking the accomodations rather challenging but we%26#39;re fairly certain it%26#39;ll be worth the hassle. So my point -- why stay in one place only?? Move around!!

thanks for the advice everyone. yeah this is my first time in hawaii. so sounds like waikiki may be a more suitable place.

now i just have to find an affordable place.

Hana to Kaanapoli-How long does it take?

How long of a drive would we have driving from Hana back to Kaanapoli?

    Thanks!

Hana to Kaanapoli-How long does it take?

Depends on the time of day, and which way you go (clock-wise or counter-clockwise). But plan on about 3 hours. It%26#39;s a very slow drive.

Hana to Kaanapoli-How long does it take?

We are driving from Kaanapoli to Hana, staying overnight in Hana, then driving back to Kaanapoli (to check out of our hotela and pick up our luggage from that hotel) and then to the airport to fly home. I guess then we%26#39;d be driving either way. Which way is best to get back?

So, why don%26#39;t you check out of your hotel in Ka%26#39;anapali the day before?????

Anyways, when you leave you will want to go counter-clockwise, and you will want to leave early (by 7 or 8 am)....this will give you plenty of time to drive slow and take in the beautiful scenery, and make stops. Take food %26amp; water with you, as there is no place to stop once you get on the road. When you return, you can continue around in the counter-clockwise direction (although there is a section of road that you are not allowed to take rental cars on, but most people do). This is a completely different terrain than what you will see on the first half of the drive. You can probaly do a search on the search bar above for ';Road to Hana'; and get a lot of insight on which way to go. If you decide to head back the way you came, just remember to be respectful and let cars pass, as the locals are trying to commute to work.

So, if you are trying to get back in time for check out, you should be sure to leave yourself extra time....just in case! Again, probably by 7 or 8 am).

We could check out I guess the night before however I didn%26#39;t want to have to take the suitcases with us. I wanted to just bring along a small overnight bag only. But I guess that would work too. We will drive the road clockwise on the way there so we should see most of the stuff that day, right? Or is there more past Hana?

We already have the Maui Revealed book.

Yeah, most of the ';good'; stuff is on the first part of the drive (counter-clockwise)....plus, this way, the mountain side is to your right, and there is a lane of cars between you and the steep cliffs to the left!!! :)

ps...glad we went all the way around, but if I did it again, I would come back the way we came. Once is enough.

Oops I meant we%26#39;d be going counter clockwise there!

We will just get up early and head back then. Thanks for your help! We%26#39;ll be there Feb 10th...can%26#39;t wait.

  • first time in Kauai

My husband and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in Jan/07 to celebrate our 10th anniversary. From the research I%26#39;ve done already, Kauai seems to have everything we are looking for in a romantic getaway. We are planning to go for two weeks and I thought that we might divide our time between staying on the east and south side of the island and of course visiting the canyon and NaPali coast from there. I am wondering though if we would be missing out on the true ';Hawaii experience'; by not visiting at least one of the other islands while we are there - any thoughts? Is it cheaper to fly to the main island and then get an inter-island flight to Kauai versus flying directly into Lihue? I look forward to hearing any feedback.

    Alison King ( Ontario, Canada)

    first time in Kauai

I do not believe there are direct flights to Lihue, everything connects in Honolulu, maybe Maui.

You have picked a great island to visit. Kauai is my favorite, along with a lot of other peoples. Since you are staying 2 weeks, I would suggest visiting another island.

    first time in Kauai

I don%26#39;t know about Ontario, but you can fly direct SFO-Lihue on United. That%26#39;s what i am doing this summer! For me, 2 weeks on Kauai would be heaven, and I would not need to go anywhere else, but if you get restless without a lot of nightlife, you may want to check out another island too, maybe Maui?

Kauai is a little harder to get to, but well worth the effort. We spent 11 days there and it wasn%26#39;t enough!

United currently flies directly into Lihue, from SFO and LAX. The return connections are brutal, however. The overnight flight into LAX arrives at 04:54, then you are waiting for connections and dead tired. Return into SFO is similar.

The interisland flights can go on sale for as low as $38 and are frequent. It might be easier to fly into Honolulu and make connections. You then have an option to spend a few days on Oahu. There is a lot to do and see there also! While it isn%26#39;t my favourite island (Kauai is), I am glad that I visited.

When I go back to Kauai in 2007, I will fly through Honolulu and spend a few days there again.

Monitor the airfares this year, using the direct and non direct options, to see what works best.

On another note: You will be flying out of TO I presume. Also, take a look at the US border cities for fares (Detroit/Buffalo for you?).

My sister flew out of Burlington,VT -Orlando, instead of Montreal on Jan 4-12 2006 for $183 p/p CA, taxes in! Five people, hotel with breakfast, airfare for %26lt;$1600 CA. I couldn%26#39;t believe it. The hour it took her to drive down was actually less than the time she stood in the Immigration line @ Trudeau Airport last year.

Weird, we got great direct flights from LIH to SFO in May. I think we left around 1:30 PM and got to SFO at night but not too late. Keep checking as it must change as demand changes. I agree I think Kauai is my favorite and by switching you basically lose a day of vacation. 2 locations on that island is a great vacation idea.

    Sorry, the airline was United.

While Kauai is absolutely gorgeous, you%26#39;ll be able to see most everything you want in a week. And that would be a relaxing week, too, not one where you%26#39;d be wiped out from doing too much on any given day.

I%26#39;d really recommend seeing a second island, my choice would be Maui. Never been to the Big Island, that might be a possibility, too. A week in Kauai followed by a week in Maui would the trip of a lifetime, IMHO!

2 shorties: I wonder if the overnight UA flights were the only options available to us because of Eastern connections/times?

I booked in Jan for Apr--maybe they were sold out!

I would pay for an overnight in either SFO or LAX to connect the next a.m. and avoid the lag/lack of sleep! Maybe next time, I will try to book separate return segments and see what pops up!

No way, not IMHO. You can certainly do both Maui and Kaua%26#39;i in 2 weeks, but if you want some time to just relax you%26#39;ll only be able to hit some of the highlights. I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by ';true Hawai%26#39;i experience'; because each of the islands has different things to offer. Maui is more developed and crowded than Kaua%26#39;i, but you can get away from both depending on where on the island you go. Kaua%26#39;i is much more laid back. If you want nightlife, it%26#39;s not the place for you.

Both islands have dozens of beautiful beaches, wonderful scenery, all kinds of interesting things to do and see, great people, good restaurants and a variety of types of places to stay. While I love Maui, I%26#39;m pretty much hooked on Kaua%26#39;i.

As far as flights, prices just depend on what the airlines are doing at the time. If you%26#39;ve never been to HI it might be worth flying into HNL and spend a day or so just to see the Arizona Memorial and maybe do the drive around Oahu. It%26#39;s very rural and beautiful once you get away from HNL. If you do that, I%26#39;d suggest doing only one other island.

You might be able to get direct flights to and/or from Lihue and/or Kahului. If you%26#39;re lucky, the new cheap interisland airline will be flying by then. I think I%26#39;d figure out an itinerary and then look at flight options. Interislands are generally pretty easy to get.

Taking red-eye from HNL to SFO or LAX and then the early flight home is a buggah. We often plan on staying over one night near the airport and catching a flight home at a more civilized hour.

Don%26#39;t worry, it%26#39;s Hawai%26#39;i. You%26#39;re going to have a blast no matter where you end up staying.

thanks to everyone who replied to my post - it reaffirmed what I had already thought - Kauai is for sure where we want to spend the majority of our trip.

If you%26#39;re going to go to two islands, go to the other one first. For once you%26#39;re seen Kauai, nothing compares.
