Things to do

I would like to know what activities there are in Kauai. We like to explore, but are not ';hikers';. We plan to stay 10 days. We are not much into tours, but would probably like to take some sort of boat tour at the beginning of our trip. Thanks in advance.

Things to do

The choice to do a boat trip or not would depend somewhat on the time of year. During the winter months, the north shore can be very rough. Sometimes the boats can make it out and sometimes they cancel. It usually is considered one of the must-do things for Kauai.

Even though you don%26#39;t ';hike'; you may still find some of the easier trails at Waimea Canyon and the Sleeping Giant interesting and beautiful.

Consider a helicopter tour with either Interisland, Air Kauai, Jack Harter, or Will Squyers.

Shopping and visiting art galleries in Poipu, in Kapaa at the Coconut Marketplace, the north shore in Hanalei and Kilauea, and on the west side in Hanapepe can be fun.

Hang out on the beach and relax, go snorkeling, scuba diving or take surfing lessons. Walk along the path in the areas where it%26#39;s completed between Lihue and Kapaa.

Go to a Luau at Smith%26#39;s.

Visit the Botanical Gardens in Poipu or on the north shore.

Go to the craft fair that%26#39;s in Kapaa every weekend and the farmer%26#39;s markets that are in different locations daily.

Check out all the restaurants you can and have shave ice every day!!

Lots to do every day, and there may be special events going on when you come to visit - check the local calendar.

Things to do

Aloha Kwills,May I ask what beaches you recommend? We will be visiting from the Pride of America in a few weeks and have never been to Kaui. We are looking for a few must sees and a lovely beach.Thank you

Kipsmom, how much time will you have ashore? Will you have a car? Do you want to swim? Snorkel? Do you need shade on the beach? I need to know how far from the ship you dare travel without fear of missing it on your return.

Hi kipsmom,

Like pzp says, I would be a little concerned about how much time you have before you have to be back on board the ship. There are some stunning beaches, but they may take more time to reach than you will have.

Some of my favorites are Poipu beach and Lydgate for snorkeling and swimming with the kids, Salt Pond, Polihale, Lumahai, Kealia, Anini, Haena/Tunnels, and Mahaulepu.

Poipu and Kalapaki beach would be close and very easy for you to get to.

EEK! I think I made a mistake here. For some reason I read boat tour and was thinking cruise boat. So, OK, favorite beaches:

ALL OF THEM. Seriously... I love Anini and Ke%26#39;e. Somehow we always end up hanging out at one or the other. Shade, facilities and can be decent snorkeling. Plus... Anini has THE TACO TRUCK! %26lt;VBG%26gt; There%26#39;s a nice little hike up above Ke%26#39;e - not the Kalalau - but you can get some great views. I%26#39;ve done it barefoot, which should tell you something about the difficulty level.

Moloa%26#39;a Bay is gorgeous but parking is really difficult. Worth trying, though, even just to see it. Po%26#39;ipu is nice but well-touristed. I%26#39;d rather go to Lawai, assuming it%26#39;s not a super-high tide and there%26#39;s actually beach there. Good snorkeling, though, the occasional turtle or monk seal, and you can sit on the Beach House restaurant lawn for the sunset. Sometimes we spend the afternoon beaching, then dress in the lua across the street and have dinner at Beach House (on reservations made MUCH earlier, of course.)

Lumahai is gorgeous when the ocean is calm if you%26#39;re not averse to a short hike down and back up. STAY OFF THE ROCKS!!! There%26#39;s a small pocket of water that%26#39;s somewhat protected, and I%26#39;ve been in the water there, but only on a very calm day. The beach will be pretty much deserted.

There%26#39;s a nice walking path along the bay in Waipouli in front of some of the resorts makai of Coconut Marketplace.

I%26#39;d recommend getting a copy of Ultimate Kaua%26#39;i Revealed for info.

Thank you both so much for your response. We are on a cruise ship that docks in Nawiliwili at 10 am and doesnt pull out till 6pm the next day.We have been to Maui a few years ago but not this lovely eden. Our son is 9 and a great swimmer.Had I been familiar with this fabuous site before ,I may not have booked this cruise as the reviews are making me very nervous. But,whatever the ship is about, how can it detract from stepping foot in paradise and we are going to have a wonderous time and be grateful to pay a visit. Thanks for any suggestions/and can you suggest a wonderful beach bar/rest.(I am traveling with my Irish relatives-cocktails are a must) :)Blessings, Annie

Duke%26#39;s is right down the street from the ship dock. They have both a restaurant and separate bar. Good food, too, and one of the better salad bars around.

With a 9 year-old, you really have to check out Lydgate park / Kamalani playground. It%26#39;s maybe 15 minutes from the dock and your son will love it.

As far as bars go, Maui would be better, but there are some places on Kauai that should work. Check out Duke%26#39;s at the Marriott in Lihue for appetizers/dinner/drinks, the Lizard Lounge in Kapaa, The Shack in Kapaa, and Tahiti Nui in Hanalei.

Have fun!!

You could easily make it to Po%26#39;ipu by car with enough time for a little beach-n-swimming. There%26#39;s a nice, very protected shallow area for keiki.

Excellent,,my thanks to you both
