My Wife, who does corporate travel for a multi-national company, had to do some catch-up work at home last night and had the newly revised airline guidelines for carry-on %26amp; checked luggage.
One thing that was news to me, and perhaps some of you, is that it is now OK to carry Mace or Pepper Spray in checked baggage (4 oz. with mechanism to prevent accidental triggering).
Before this change, not only were Mace %26amp; PS prohibited items, if you bought them from an out of town source, it could only be shipped by ground.
There have been some discussions on these pages recently regarding the growing number of areas in Hawaii where the welcome mat has become somewhat tattered. Also imagine we can all think of isolated beaches, or hikes, that were somewhat worrisome; along with questionable parking garages, not feeling comfortable leaving the Lanai door open etc.
While Mace %26amp; Pepper Spray aren%26#39;t the = of packing a 38, they just might provide an extra margin of safety in certain circumstances.

Leave the weapons, whether offensive or defensive, at home, and try to enjoy yourself.
While you%26#39;re at it, leave your paranoia behind too!
Mace %26amp; Pepper Spray
Count me as one of the people who can NOT ';think of isolated beaches, or hikes, that were somewhat worrisome; along with questionable parking garages, not feeling comfortable leaving the Lanai door open etc';
While I don%26#39;t think it is a good idea to be really vulnerable while you sleep no matter where you are by leaving a door open, I can%26#39;t imagine making sure I pack mace or pepper spray.
You guys are right. There%26#39;s absolutely no crime anywhere in Hawaii. It%26#39;s an idyllic paradise where butterflies flit about the mango trees covered with early morning dew. Rainbows and dancing girls are everywhere hanging lei%26#39;s on the necks of newly arrived visitors.
So leave that sense of caution at home along with the pepper spray, leave your valuables in your unlocked rental car, and sleep with the lanai door wide open. You%26#39;ll have a grrrreattt time.........
Man, kwils, I%26#39;d like to go on YOUR guided tour. Please make my reservation for May 7.
kamaaina, I just got back from Maui. I did pack my pepper spray in my check in with no prob., It does have that safety mechanism. Unfortunately, I couldn%26#39;t pack my 1 lb. pepper spray. LOL.
personally i don%26#39;t enjoy travelling anymore because i don%26#39;t feel comfortable to always be on guard, always looking over my shoulder and hanging on to my bag. what kind of a holiday is that? so i stay here where we still don%26#39;t lock doors. i hope i can see criminals rot in h*ll when the time comes.
Wow kwils11 that%26#39;s harsh. I don%26#39;t think anything we wrote indicated that we were naive about crime in HI or anywhere. I don%26#39;t think I said I thought it was idyllic. I think I even mentioned that I wouldn%26#39;t leave my lanai door open but I wouldn%26#39;t think of packing pepper spray. I don%26#39;t leave my caution at home but I don%26#39;t use pepper spray around here nor do any people I know use it. I%26#39;ve always had a great time in HI.
Sorry Suzie, didn%26#39;t mean to sound harsh and it wasn%26#39;t really directed to you in particular. Unfortunately there ARE people who have those visions dancing in their heads and come to Hawaii throwing all caution and common sense to the tradewinds. All too often, those are the ones that either get rescued from the ocean, canyons, or spend a bunch of time filling out police reports !!
I think Kama was just trying to provide information and not instill a sense of fear or paranoia in anyone.
Well, I AM one of those people that gets a little uneasy on certain beaches and areas---I%26#39;m not paranoid but try to be aware of my surroundings. Still, often while beachcombing I%26#39;ll forget the time or where I am, glance and and think, where%26#39;d those fishermen come from and how long have they been there? Being female, certain situations do make me a little uneasy, I try to avoid those. I don%26#39;t carry spray to the beach but it%26#39;s not a bad idea when I go alone. Also, it%26#39;s good to know I could take it w/me when I travel w/no hassle. I usually travel alone to the mainland getting in late at night, then having to get a car, hotel or drive to my destination---all times it doesn%26#39;t hurt to have a little Just-in-Case Spray......
Tks, Kama, for the new info.
The topic was primarily for informational purposes (although I%26#39;m hopeful that my Wife will humor me %26amp; pack the pepper spray I attach to her key ring).
Certainly didn%26#39;t intend to create an uproar, but if it incensed one or two folks, and benefitted three or four, that%26#39;s enough to keep my boat afloat.
