maui restaurants

Hi,

My husband and I will be staying at Sheraton Maui this May. I am wondering what everyone recommends for restaurants? We like sushi and other seafood, as well as desserts. What are some good dinner suggestions?

Thanks!

Bubba Gumps in Lahaina, yummmy!!!

I know you like sushi and seafood, but you have to try Johnny%26#39;s burgers across from the Ka%26#39;anapali golf course clubhouse. It will be a 5 minute walk if your at the Sheraton. You won%26#39;t regret it.

Nicks Fishmarket at the Fairmont Kea Lani, and Humuhumu at the Grand Wailea, both are in Wailea and have fantastic seafood and desserts! If you can only get to one i%26#39;d choose Humuhumu - the food in my opinion is the best i%26#39;ve ever had and the atmoshpere and views are amazing! Mama%26#39;s Fish House is also nice for that ';tropical'; feel, probably the most expensive of the 3 and I found the food to be just average - but if you want to feel like you%26#39;re dining in a tropical paradise then this is the place to go - they win in the atmoshpere department!

My favorite dinner on Maui was at Mama%26#39;s. Amazing food and atmosphere! YOu must eat there.

My second favorite was Nick%26#39;s Fishmarket. Amazing food and service!

Enjoy!

I second Johnny%26#39;s as a great place for a casual dinner. Grab the nachos and then burgers. Watch the looks on people%26#39;s faces when they think they%26#39;re going into the Italian restaurant upstairs!

For a more formal dinner, try Casanova%26#39;s in Makawao for wonderful Italian food, Jacques in Paia for seafood and great people-watching, or Kimo%26#39;s in Lahaina for good food and great sunsets.

Re : Sansei

Just a caution....

I had Sansei on my must do list and tried to get in two times and then gave up ( three kids got tired of trying! )

Make sure to call ahead to the restaurant well in advance of when you want to go and find out what pricing specials they are running. For example on Sundays and Mondays between 5 and 6:30 they have 50% off but... no reservations hence a very lonnnnnng line and the likelyhood of getting in for the special price small unless you happen to be at the front of the line. You can of course come back at 6:30 if you wish. We didn%26#39;t wish to so we left planning on going back - the next time at 4:30 to be sure to get in!!! So....

Thursday comes along and I just assume everything is the same as last time so we hustle the kids off at 4:20 to be in line at Sansei by 4:30. A sign on the door says- ';Open at 5:30 Reservations this line.

No Reservations this line'; Huh???

I poked my head in the door and asked the hostess what all this meant to be told that Thursday they offered 25% off, opened at 5:30 not 5:00 (like they do on Sunday, Monday) and take reservations. Confused yet? Needless to say they were full in the reservation department for that night but we could wait in the stand by line if we wished... Well we had already dragged the kids out twice to eat here and it just seemed like an omen that we weren%26#39;t meant to eat sushi this time on Maui so we ended up driving into Lahaina to Mixed Plate. Fun, inexpensive but not the sushi I had been hearing so much about...

So, if you really want to try Sansei heed my advice and call ahead and then just to make sure call back and talk to someone else. It can be very confusing!!!

(And please don%26#39;t respond telling me what an awesome meal we missed!!! I know!!!)

Thanks for all of your responses! We%26#39;ll definitely check out Sensai and Nick%26#39;s fishmarket. Any other suggestions for great desserts?

For dessert, try Chocolate Souffle at Roy%26#39;s. You%26#39;ll need to put in the order during dinner since it takes a while to prepare, but its yum yum!

Speaking of dessert, if you have a chance you should try Haupia (coconut custard), which is a local favorite. Kaiwahine (the local expert around here) can probably chime in with some places where you can get good Haupia.
