Short hikes with kids

Heading for our first family trip to the BI in June.

I sure have learned a bunch from the posts here, thanks!

I would like to go on some easy scenic 1-2 mile hikes with my kids, ages 10%26amp;12.

Any suggestions?

try Koloko national park in Kona,: the petroglyph trail n Waikoloa : Volcanoes national park, : the rest of the island is private and youu need a tour company to trespass.

Try Lapakahi State Park in North Kohala. It stretches from the Highway down to the ocean.

About 300 acres, it is the site of a 600 year old Native Hawaiian fishing village. Some has been restored and the ruins of much of the village structures and walls are still evident.

There are signs explaining the village and lifestyle, there is sometimes a ranger (or docent) on site to answer questions, and they usually have some Hawaiian games/activities laid out to try.

Its a short hike of a mile or two to go through the village to the ocean (and there is pretty good snorkeling there) and back up to the parking lot.

The hike around the Akaka Falls lookout, through a rainforest that you would swear is a landscaped garden, is another short favorite.

Whereever you end of going...take water.

Aloha warf, the zoo in Hilo kids love it.
