We are going to use a tour operator for a hike in the rain forest, but wanted to do Haleakala on our own. Has anyone hiked the volcano on their own and suggestions?
Haleakala Hiking
Yes, we hiked down last year. We did the Sliding Sands trail loop which starts down Sliding Sands and loops around and back up to a lower parking lot (where it is easy to hitch-hike back up to your car). This popular loop is about 11-12 miles total and described in Maui Revealed and other guides.
It was a pretty long hike so if you aren%26#39;t in great shape, I would suggest something easier like hiking down Sliding Sands and back up again, which is only 5-6 miles total. Sliding sands is interesting terrain and because you %26#39;slide%26#39; a lot in the sand, I HIGHLY suggest wearing multiple socks to avoid blisters (which we both got and unfortunately made the rest of our hike a bit more unpleasant that anticipated).
It does get hot in the crater so wear layers since it will be cold in the morning when you want to start and heat up quickly by mid morninng. Bring lots of water, hat, sun protection and rainwear too. Basically, be prepared for any type of weather. The 12 miles will take you the good part of a day to complete.
